5 Frugal Tips for Saving When Gas Prices Soar

5 Frugal Tips for Saving When Gas Prices Soar

If you drive a car, then I donít have to tell you that gas prices are on the rise. In the past week or so, the retail price for gasoline has soared, bringing the average cost to $3.38 $3.51 a gallon. This is according to American Automobile Association (AAA) statistics released by CNN Money.

While high prices may cause panic for some consumers, remember there are steps you can take to make sure soaring prices donít send you into a financial tailspin. Here are 5 frugal tips for saving gas when prices soar, courtesy of Money Management International:

1. Search for the best price. Gas prices usually vary from one area of town to the other. Websites such as GasPriceWatch - Power to the People at the Pump and Gas Buddy can give you detailed information about the gas prices at stations in your neighborhood.
2. Drive sensibly. Did you know that exceeding the speed limit by just 5 mph can result in an average fuel economy loss of 6 percent? Constant accelerating and braking wastes gas, and according to CNN Money, it can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent when driving at highway speeds and by 5 percent when cruising around town.
3. Plan trips in advance. If you know you have to run multiple errands in a day, make a plan that will help you consolidate the number of trips you have to take. This tactic is also useful for driving down the cost of road trips. Gas prices vary from one city to another. Plan your route so you donít get stuck paying extra because you have no choice.
4. Routinely maintain your vehicle. Get your vehicle checked on a regular basis to make sure all systems are running smoothly. Make sure spark plugs and sensors are replaced on time and the tire pressure is at the right level. If these arenít maintained, your vehicle will have to work harder, which means guzzling more gas. (Note to self: the car is due for an oil change!)
5. Look into alternatives. Research other methods of transportation. These could include carpooling with co-workers, using public transportation or even riding a bicycle. Or walking more!

None of this advice is rocket science, and Iím sure youíve read similar advice here before. But given how gas prices have gone upĖand likely will stay up with the unrest in Africa and the Middle EastĖI felt it was a good idea to reiterate these tips.

ALSO, there are free apps online you can download that show you the cheapest gas in your city.

Thanks for the tips. I follow the same principles to save on gas. I find planning trips most helpful though. It's important to plan trips so you can do errands in one go without having to go back and forth. This saves loads of gas! Carpooling is a great idea too. I find taking public transport uncomfortable so carpooling is a good alternative for me.

Great tips sweetmommyoftwo, thanks for sharing them. I find that with gas going up, I feel guilty when I take unnecessary trips. Most Moms have the job of chaperon it seems. Dropping one kid off here and taking the next kid there, so it really hits hard when gas prices soar. Maybe the most sensible thing for our family would be to downgrade the minivan into something with better millage and more environmentally friendly.

Not only that, but keep your acceleration constant. Keep yourself from speeding up and slowing down when in traffic. A steady pace and a steady foot will save a good amount of gas.

save on gas

I don't know if it's true, but I read that if you buy gas in the morning, it's cooler so you get more gas in your tank for the same price (especially in the summer). I also heard that if you pump it at the slowest rate (on the slowest notch), you get more gas per buck. And of course I try not to accelerate too quickly, especially between lights (unlike my spouse, lol)...

These are good tips to live by. It's so hard for me because I wanna go everywhere and I can't! I have to mentally prepare myself so I won't fall into that trap!
