Smile Telecommuting: Difference In Life

I used to work in Washington, DC and spend approximately 1.5 hours travel to or from my work - total 2-3 hours on the road. Working from home has given me a better life. The good side is there is no traffic or rushing out of the house to get to the office "in time". At first, I thought the bad side was not interacting with others. While in DC, it was necessary to build a network because you never knew what the government was going to do or when your contract was ending. So working from home, I lost the ability to network in face to face. However, I have found that I have a lot more time to do my job because of the reduced drop by visits from other workers. I don't have to listen to what happened last night, whether someone was in a bad mood or be a referee between many co-workers. In addition, I don't have to deal with sides or try to be in the "in-crowd".
So if you are considering working from home/telecommuting, think about what you will gain. Time is the number one thing. You may not interact as much but instant messaging/video calls may make up for that. So determine if it is necessary for your personality to be with people or whether you can work at home and be happy/successful.
