Default Mystery Shopping Scam?

Hello Everybody,

So, I just read this email about a part time detective shopping job that pays $400 per shop. I somehow doubt any shopping company would pay that much! I'm not buying into it, especially the part that says you have to cash it at your bank! Please tell me what you think. Thanks!

I would say that does sound like a scam. I doubt that any shop would pay that much! Would be nice though.

Oh, that's a well known scam. They send you a fake check, usually for >$1000. Then, they ask you to cash the check at your bank, keep $400, and then wire the remainder to somebody else, god knows where, as a supposed 'mystery shop" at Western Union, or something like that.

What really happens is that by the time your bank notifies you that the check has bounced, you're out the $400 + whatever money you wired elsewhere, often leaving your bank account overdrawn.

Run from this, screaming into the night!

I've done mystery shopping before. The way it works is that you go to the store, restaurant, gas station, etc... and make a small purchase while evaluating things like customer service, cleanliness, etc... AFTER your mystery shopping review is turned in with your receipt, you are paid an agreed upon amount plus the amount of your purchase.

No reputable company is going to just email you out of the blue about a job opportunity you never applied for. EVER.

Ditto everyone else. Classic scam. Stay far, far away. And remember that most of the time unsolicited emails offering a too-good-to-be-true job are a red flag. You have to ask yourself if you never contacted the company, then why are they contacting you? Legit work at home companies don't contact you first unless you have made contact before.

It's a classic. The same type of scam has been going for at least 10 years. Stay away.

Not only is it a scam, but it's a scam that could land you in jail too for fraud and theft...
