How Much Home Can You Afford?

A good rule to use when determining affordability is to keep your mortgage, taxes and insurance costs to 25-30 percent of your income. Another way to calculate affordability is to look at homes that are about two and a half times your annual salary. If you overspend on your mortgage, you won't have any funds left over for retirement savings or an emergency fund. You may want to look at a smaller home so that you won't be so stretched financially.
