Is a blog a must to have success with affiliate marketing? What are some other ways to promote and make money with it?

Your own blog is not a must have, but it does help. You can get a free blog hosted with WordPress, or Blogger.

Here are some other marketing options that you can use for affiliate marketing.

Pay Per Click
Classified Ads
Solo Ads
Posting on other niche related blogs.
Commenting on other niche related blogs, forums.

I would also suggest email marketing and 'ezine' marketing. There may be some 'free' advertising available. Successful affiliate marketing depends on you reaching your 'target' market (i.e., quilt pattern for quilters). Also, consider Facebook but rather than use 'daily' advertising schedule, try scheduling every other day or 3x a week .. helps to 'spread' your time out. There are sites that offer 'splash' pages too, not sure if they're free. Research all available options and tackle each, conquer one method and move on to the next.

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts

To succeed in affiliate marketing you need to take advantage of asymmetries.

1. Information asymmetry (buying at a lower cost of traffic than you sell it for) --- some people don't even have public sites for this, but route the traffic over IP blocks. This is like trading energy. One need only be able to find and navigate a spread.
2. Knowledge asymmetry (i.e. how SEO works, how PPC works, how YouTube works, etc). For this you do need some sort of end point...a blog as you suggest.

You should choose the right Affiliate program for you. Google AdSense is a popular option because it’s an easy program to apply for and it is simple to set up on your blog. You can also sign up to individual affiliate programs which often pays more than the networks, but the downside is that it might take longer to get paid. You’d have to be a lot more organized to track each merchant, and the corresponding logins and passwords.

You have to decide how you plan to drive traffic to your affiliate offers. Will you be using paid methods or free methods? If you're using free methods - which one(s)? Blogging, video marketing, social media?...

The only reasons to have a blog to promote affiliate offers is if:

a) you want to use blogging to drive traffic to your offers and/or b) you want to establish a presence in the affiliate niche you're working in

You can also use a social media account for affiliate marketing. For example, create an account on instagram focusing on losing weigt or luxury producta and make sure to gain a big following. You can then post about affiliate product every 3 days and put the affiliate link in your bio.

Affiliate marketing via social media will work well as long as the focus is right.

For instance, if your posts focus on weight loss then your products must be weight loss related. If you're providing weight loss information, tips, advice, and try to promote a luxury related product you'll lose followers quickly.

To be an affiliate marketer, you'll need traffic. That can come from organic search engine traffic, or paid traffic.

Without a blog or website, the only way to be an affiliate marketer is to drive traffic to a lead capture page with paid ads (or maybe youtube videos), capture email addresses, and then you could send out affiliate email offers to your email list.

Just some basic concepts.

Having a blog can't hurt and will give you more exposure and credibility.

A blog is definitely helpful but not a must. Use some of the free blogs first to get used to the platforms, like blogspot, wordpress and livejournal

then drive traffic with social media or other paid ads like ppc and ppv.
