View Full Version : Weight Lifting...Weight Gain

03-25-2008, 08:38 AM
Hey everyone!

I joined the gym about three weeks ago and have been running / weight lifting consistently (5 days per week).

I love how I feel..but I've gained weight, and my clothes are still tight.

I know that muscle weighs more than fat which is why I've gained a bit - but shouldn't my body be shrinking (at least a little bit)?

Have any of you experienced this? Was there a turning point for you?

Oh - and I've been eating the same as I did pre-gym.

Thanks for any advise!

Muscle doesn't weight more than fat, per se. It takes up less space, basically.

But YES, every single time I have slacked off training and then go back, I always, always, always gain weight....at first. Then things start happening really quickly http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

Three weeks is a good bit, though, so you should start seeing some results really soon. But I don't know what you're doing - like, how many reps, what amount of weight, are you using enough weight that by the last 3 reps, you're sort of struggling?

Areyou weight training 5 days a week or do you mean you're working out in general 5 days a week? If you are lifting 5 days a week, knock it off. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif Results from weight training comewhen werest - you have got to give your body days of rest from weights.

What are you eating? Are you keeping track? Give me a breakdown of an average day (and be honest - not that you wouldn't, I'm just sayin' http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

My initial thoughts are this - you may not be lifting enough, not resting,and/or there is something going on with your eating.

You're not seeing any results at all? Not even a little? Have you measured?

Sorry for the 20 questions, but I need more details to be of any help. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

And I should add - when I say "something" is possibly going on with your eating, I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. It could be that you're not eating enough since you are eating "the same" as before you started lifting. Or you could not be getting enough protein, etc.

Thought I had better clarify! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

Hey! Thanks for your reply! Yes, I actually lift weights 5 days per week. I run / or use an elliptical for 30-40 minutes and lift for 20-30. When I lift I do legs and abs one day...and arms the next - that's how I give the muscles a rest.

As far as eating is concerned...I hate to say this - but I really haven't kept track (nor do I ever).

I usually have a shake of some sort for breakfast (Costco's version of Slim Fast) because I don't like to *eat* breakfast and then a Lean Cuisine for lunch followed by whatever I am serving my family for dinner....typical meals like hamburgers, tacos, spaghetti, etc...

I haven't changed my eating habits at all since working out (maybe I just need to eat more???)

I haven't measured either but my jeans are still tight despite a dramatic change in how active I am.

It seems odd because the last time I starting running / lifting - etc..when DD was born...it seemed like I had almost instant results.

Anyway - I am not giving up - I would just like to figure out what the heck is going on!

BTW - FANTASTIC blog! =0) I am bookmarking it!

Oh, tacos! I'm on a taco kick right now - please do not mention tacos! I crave them every day!!! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif And I just had them last night....and today....and will probably have another for dinner tonight! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Okay, at first glance, I'm going to say you need to #1 - eat more. Do two snacks, one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon. Opt for protein, so low-fat/light cottage cheese, low-fat cheese, an apple with peanut butter, stuff like that.

#2 - dump the Slim Fast wannabe UNLESS it doesn't have a lot of sugar in it like Slim Fast. As you know from my blog - I have declared war on sugar! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif Especially when training. But honestly, Slim Fast has a ton of sugar. AND the last I looked - it has artificial sweetner (aspartame, I think?) and there was a recent study about artificial sweetners causing weight gain.

Training 3 days since you're rotating isn't bad. I wonder - are you lifting enough weight? How many sets are you doing?

I'm so glad you're not going to give up! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley31.gif I really do think it's common that people gain a little at first. And yeah, I'm noticing that results don't come as easily the older you get. NOT that we're old by any means, but you know what I mean...lol.

Oh, I meant to tell you too - I don't like to "eat" my breakfast either, so I usually do a smoothie with a protein powder and fruit, if that helps.

Thanks again Jnmurra! =) I am so clueless. I never thought about the amount of sugar in a Slim Fast. I just assumed it didn't have much.

I am also trying to quit my diet soda habit. You wouldn't believe the migraine I get at noon when I normally have a few cans of pop. Ug. (Or maybe you would). =)

Anyway - thank you so much for your advise! I still haven't lost weight, but I am noticing that my flab is firming up! =)

Also - DH told me that my face looked different ("skinnier"). Can you measure your face? LOL.

I've done a bit of research on the weight lifting / weight gain issue and am wondering if I may simply be retaining H20. My rings are tight and my excess weight is really limited to my belly.

I've increased my h20 considerably but would love to hear if you have any other suggestions. You have been a wealth of info! =)

Well, YAY on the compliment of your face looking skinnier! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif It's always awesome when someone takes notice!!! My husband told me this morning after I got dressed in my workout clothes, "You're getting there." http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif Um, okay, it was 5:00 a.m. and I really am NOT an early morning person, and at first, I was offended. But then I thought, "Wait, I *think* that might've been a compliment!" http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Yeah, if I remember correctly (you know, I got a feeble mind http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif), Slim Fast, last I checked it, actually had MORE sugar than a bottle of regular soda!! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif

OH, you know - I hadn't even thought of water retention for some reason, and that's usually my first thought....LOL! It very well could be, so give it another week or two and do some measuring, especially since your rings are tight and it sounds like you're bloated. Is it anywhere near TOTM? I bet that could be part of the problem, BUT the extra water should help flush it out. And if you want, you can also try some Alfalfa supplements. They're pretty inexpensive and they really help with that issue.

Oh, and about the water - I think the experts are suggesting now that if you exercise regularly, 8 to 10 glasses isn't enough because exercise causes dehydration. I'm not sure how much you're drinking now?
YES, I know the trauma of quitting soda...*sigh* I really wish it didn't have to be that way http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif This time when I quit, though, I didn't even get a headache! I was super duper duper surprised by that. But of course, I've taken up drinking coffee within the last 6 months, so I have a cup in the morning and maybe another mid morning and that's probably what keeps the headache at bay. I don't know, though. I was just d-o-n-e with it. It was keeping me from seeing any results and I just knew that I would never get where I want to be if I kept it up, so it had to go.

Keep up the good work! I think you'll start seeing awesome results in no time!
