What to Do when Work Spills into Family Time

As a WAHM, you know that family time is important and want to make sure you can both work and spend quality time with your family. When work becomes so overwhelming that it is taking time away from the family, both you and the family can become stressed because of the lack of work/life balance.

Time Management

If you are continually mixing your work life with your family life, you may need to look at how you are managing your time. Ask yourself why your work is spilling over into your family time. Do you have too much to do? Are you getting distracted? Are you starting work on time?

If your goal is to work 5 hours a day, but you have 8 hours of work to accomplish, you may need to reevaluate either your work schedule or what you need to accomplish. If you are telecommuting for a specific company, there may not be much you can do about your work load, but make sure you are staying focused throughout your working day.

Make sure that there will be nothing to distract you before you go to work. If you think of things you need to accomplish outside of work during your shift, write them down. Don't attend to them until after you are done with your work.

Create a Schedule

Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Give yourself a set amount of time to complete a project, and stay focused on meeting your deadline. Not only could this help you not carry your work into family time, you may find that you are able to do more work in less amount of time.

If there are outside tasks that must be accomplished during your workday, set a time to accomplish them, and give yourself the allotted amount of time beforehand. Work around the distractions.

Discussing Work

Even if you are finished with all your work, you may still be stressed about your work. Be very careful in not associating your work stress with your family, as that can cause family stress problems.

You may let them know that you have had a stressful day, but be wary of talking about your work for very long, as discussion could be another form of your work spilling over into your family time.

Communication in Key

There will still be times when you may need to work a little longer, and it will affect your family time. When these times occur, communicate with your family about them, and let them know that while they always come first, there is something important occuring at work that needs your attention. When you finish your work, spend time with them and leave all work issues inside your office.

If you are having a difficult workweek and have devote more time than usual to your job, consider setting aside some time on the next weekend to do something special with your family. It is very important, not only for your family, but for you, to have time away from work.
