How to Bring Spring into Your Home Office

Just because you're working indoors doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the beautiful and inspiring weather outside.

Ahh, springtime is here. The birds are chirping, the trees are beginning to flower, and you can finally see the lush green grass on your lawn. Problem is, you’re stuck inside your home office. Here are ways in which you can bring the beauty of spring right into your home office.

Open the Windows

Let’s face it: winter stinks—literally. Score some fresh air by letting spring’s sweet scent into your home. By getting clean cool air circulating throughout your home office, it can actually boost your productivity. It will make your mind sharper, more focused, and help you stay on task. If you’re one of the many who suffer from seasonal allergies (thus making open windows a little tricky this time of the year), you can create naturally scented cleaners instead. For example, a lemon-lavender cleaner contains just vinegar, lemon peels, and lavender. It not only can help you clean your desk, but also leaves the air smelling fresh and, due to the lavender, leaves you feeling relaxed!

Bring the Outdoors In

One of the easiest ways to get one-on-one with nature (and still get your reports in on time) when you have a telecommuting job is by bringing the outdoors inside. For example, you can freshen up your space with a vase full of happy spring flowers, or you can get a pretty potted plant to sit on your desk. Not sure which plants are perfect for indoors? Plants such as English Ivy, Ferns, Spider Plant, or a Dracaena are ideal for office spaces, as is the Bamboo plant, which can keep you zen as you work. What’s even better is that some of these plants act as a natural air filter, absorbing harmful toxins and creating a safer and healthier work environment.

Spring Clean Your Space

During the winter, your office space might have gone into its own hibernation underneath piles of paper and a menagerie of assorted office supplies. Awaken your space—and become a more effective worker—by spring cleaning your space. If you can’t see any surfaces in your home office, it’s time for a big purge. Create three bins: Keep, Donate, Toss, and take everything off your desk. By removing everything, it prevents you from shuffling items around, only to wind up keeping everything anyway. Once you’ve shredded the papers you don’t need and filed and decided what you’re going to keep, clean your office completely, from printers to monitors and everything in between. Only then should you return items to their proper places.

Spring is a great time of renewal, and there’s no reason why you can’t renew your home office, too. By keeping your space neat, clean, and smelling great, you’ll get to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors—right from the comfort of your home office.
