5 Tips for Learning New Job Skills

With technology and business practices constantly changing, additional skills are needed in order to stay in business for the long-term.

Everyone has days when it seems people want you to deliver on every skill but the ones you have. To stay competitive with your business, you will need to make sure your skills are always fresh and that you are always learning new ones. The more you know and offer, the more clients you can attract. This will translate into a bigger business and more money for you.

To make sure you always have the skills clients are looking for there are several things you can do.

Make a list of the skills clients are asking for. Know what your clients want before you try to learn skills to satisfy their needs. As you make your list, note skills that more than one client needs. After talking to several clients, you will have a good idea about what you need to learn first to help the most people.

Start with one skill. Now that you know what is most important, start with just that skill. Don’t think about all of the others that your clients want. Focus on learning one before you move on to the next thing. Be patient. It can take several weeks to learn a new skill. You can’t give up when you don’t master the skill in just a few days.

Make sure learning this skill is attainable. This means that you may simply not have the talents to learn certain skills easily. Some people have a talent for writing, others for math or art. If you aren’t creative, learning art skills may be much harder for you. You can still learn, but since it isn’t your passion, it could take even longer and you may not enjoy the process as much.

Hire a coach. If you know someone who has the talent you are looking for, consider hiring that person to teach you the new skill. You might even be able to work out a deal with someone who is willing to train you in exchange for helping build their business. If you refer other people to your coach, hopefully they will do the same for you and you will both be building your businesses.

Take a college course. Many colleges offer online courses so you can easily learn the skills you need while still working and taking care of your family. Before you sign up for a college course, you should check your local community for adult education classes. Many counties offer adult classes for free or at a minimal cost and these may be finished quicker than the college course.

For your business to keep growing you cannot let yourself get too comfortable or you may miss valuable opportunities. With all of the competition you will face with your business, learning new skills is not an option. You will have to keep learning new talents to stay competitive.
