I do a little web design on the side, or used to. I'm trying to get back in, but things have changed. I've been playing a little with joomla.... or should I just shell out for dreamweaver?

Try self-hosted WordPress, you can do anything with it.

There are plenty of free options aside from Dreamweaver (thank God!). If you are on Windows, Notepad++ works wonders! There is also jEdit, BBEdit, and the like if you are on a Mac. I think that Coffee Cup software even offers a free html editor.

Aside from that, I agree with scadesigns, you can't go wrong with self-hosted Wordpress. The learning curve on Wordpress is a lot less than on Joomla. Trust me.

Do what you can with WordPress to start. If you find you need an editor, there are free ones.

I did get DW and I love it, but I have some fairly steady work or it is hard to justify the expense. Also, I work on sites that have use DW templates, and to work on those sites with another editor caused problems.

One nice thing that Adobe has started is subscriptions, so you can subscribe to DW on a month by month basis, rather than having to shell all that $$$ out at once.

Do I have to go back to school to become a free lance web designer?

The most important thing in deciding on a platform is whether you'll be handling your clients content updates or if they will be once the project is complete.

Wordpress is by far the simplest to teach a client (even the non-techie ones) how to login and make a blog post after you get the site designed, installed and set up for them.

All of our clients' sites are Wordpress and with the right plugins, WP is a fully-featured cms that can be used as a basic blog or full ecommerce site.
