I am wondering if it is possible to buy a domain from one comapny and get hosting for that domin with another company? If so what would I have to do to set all of that up to make sure it work's properly?

Yes, it's possible.

Setting it up will vary depending on the companies involved.

What kind of website are you planning on building? I'd be glad to help you! smileys/smiley4.gif

Basically I am just building a fansite for one of my sisters. I am not sure how I would even go about setting up anything but I thought that I would ask before I start the ordering for her. I guess she wouldn't need any thing really expensive, just something basic and with enough bandwidth to carry visitors.

You just have to set up the nameservers where your domain was bought at to point to the new hosting. They usually will give you that information. It's pretty simple.

Go daddy hosting and domain names are pretty cheap, by the way.

I think it all depends on how you want to line up your eggs in the basket. I have server space with a couple of of domains hosted there, as well as a few on remotely hostedlocations. The hosting I offer includesfree domain name registration, so most of mine are setup the same way.

Brenda003 is absolutely right.

I have all my domains purchased at godaddy and none of them hosted there.

You can actually set the nameservers when you purchase the domain name, that way your domain name doesn't sit on godaddy's parked pages server and you can have control of it right away.

Otherwise you have to log into your account, and change the nameserver. And I know godaddy doesn't make that change instantaneously (they want the traffic to their parked pages ads smileys/smiley17.gif)

Yes, that's possible. Actually, having your domain and hosting separate is preferred.

I register all my domains at Godaddy, and I have my hosting setup somewhere else (DealHostUSA (http://www.dealhostusa.com)).

By the way, if you use GoDaddy... I currently have GoDaddy coupon codesposted on my site. Use them to save on your purchase. Just click on my sig logo.
