Allie & her bofriend decided to bake today while I was gone. They used some butter-flavored Crisco that was in the back of the pantry [which I'd forgotten was there from Xmas 3 yrs ago] & didn't know it could go bad. When I got home they had me & DH taste bars & Ididnt' think anything of it but they smelled funny but thought itwasme& ate a big one. So did DH & both the kids. I saw the Crisco can on counter, opened it & smelled it & knew it had gone rancid. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif

So: now I ask: can you get sick from it? we all had mild gut aches right afterwards but nothing else really so far. DH took that can right out to the garbage.

I would say that if you didn't eat too much of the Crisco (as in, did anyone eat half the pan of whatever was baked?) I would say you will probably be fine.

Obviously, throw away not only the Crisco but also whatever they made with it.

I don't know what "Crisco"is, but even without knowing this the answer to your question can only be "yes", I'm afraid, because you can certainly get sick from eating rancid "anything". smileys/smiley5.gif

I didn't know Crisco could go rancid. I've been known to leave used Crisco in my deep fryer to reuse over and over again. I change it when it starts to smell burnt or has too many crumbs in it.

Then again I don't use butter flavored Crisco.

I DID have a can of it become infested with the moths from hell. I had an infestation of Indian Meal Moths in my house. It was horrible! I think they are gone, but saw a moth flying a few weeks ago. It struck fear in my heart. But I haven't seen any worms, so I'm crossing my fingers that it was a fluke and it may have been the ONLY one left and it didn't lay eggs anywhere.

Let's hope so ... but on the other hand, "flukes" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver_fluke) can also be pretty bad for you! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-020.gif

No major problems. Just each had a stomach ache for a while but nothing else. We each only ate one big bar so that stopped anything else. Allie also thinks the jalapenos that were in my chili we ate later helped kill any bugs too. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif

So yes Crisco [of any kind hubby informed me] CAN go rancid. He said it helps if you store it in the fridge it won't go bad easily. Edited by: LisaRose

I'd say that if a whole day has passed and you're still feeling alright you probably don't have anything to worry about.

Yulia, Crisco is all-vegetable shortening. Itreplaces lard in pie crusts and other baking. I know lard definately CAN go bad quickly! Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be more careful with mine! Never heard getting of bugs in it, though...http://www.wahm.com/forum/forum_images/post_button_smiley.gif
