Hello!
I was wondering if anyone here has ever filed their taxes on-line then had to do a Form 1040X (which you HAVE to mail out) due to not having all forms done on-line..if so keep reading..
I had done taxes on-line then the person's taxes I was doing, AFTER I had submitted what they had, they found additional forms (1099's, etc.) and I called the IRS and I was to fill out a Form 1040X and send it by MAIL only. Since the IRS is closed today I thought I would come here and see if anyone has actually done this before and my concern is:
Since they made the bank deposit (it was a direct deposit) from the ON-LINE submission what will happen or what should I have the person do because the CORRECT amount they get back is LESS after I did the Form 1040X. I am just hoping he will just have to pay the difference back to the IRS. smileys/smiley5.gif
Any help is appreciated!

Yes, I have had that happen to me before. The difference will just have to be paid back to IRS. I actually even filled out the 1040x online through the website I used to file taxes and then just had to print it and send it in the mail, that way all the calculations are done for you.If you are worried that he will be in trouble because of it, he won't as long as the difference is paid back.

Okay, thank you for this info! I have been worried all day and of course they are closed today! :) I will still call to double check though only because I am weird like that but, thanks for the reassurance!

That's just an ammendment and I've done many of them in my time as an accountant. If you look on the form, it asks what the amount of the refund was that you had already received and then it will have you figure out how much additional refund is owed to the taxpayer or how much of that previous refund is due back to the IRS. I think those calculations start on Line 19 of the form. You can probably find the answer to your question written in the instruction booklet, so that could save you a phone call. :) Good luck.

No problem, dealing with the IRS can be scary.

Will they send me something about what and where to send the money he owes?? I don't know what to do now..I do know that the first submission has been put into his bank account so he can pay the difference whenever..

I have always just sent it in with the form that has to be mailed back when I have owed a balance.
