ANP hires experienced medical, legal and general transcriptionists from the US and Canadas independent contractors. They prefer transcriptionists who can commmit to two audio hours four days a week. Turn around times are quick but not unreasonable, and pay is by the word.

I've worked for them for over a year. I do a lot of medical advisory board meetings, conferences, round tables, et cetera. They're good to work for.

Interesting tidbits

Helpful information from 4under4:

If you are looking at doing general transcription, there's really no way to "train" for it. It's really just a matter of getting your foot in the door and doing it regularly to build your speed. It does take a certain level of typing speed (I would say if you are much under 70 WPM, you need to work on that first), and you may need to purchase some software and equipment.

Every company has their own format and rules for whether you are to type what you are hearing verbatim, etc. so that's why I say you can't really train for it. The subject matter will vary greatly, so it's not like there are certain vocabulary words you can study or anything. I will say that if you are a well-read person and have a basic knowledge of a wide variety of topics, you will find this work much easier. It's also a benefit to have good research skills because you will definitely come across a lot of terms and companies that you need to look up.

There are companies that are willing to hire with no experience, AccuTran and Tigerfish being two that I can think of off the top of my head. In fact, Tigerfish has their test posted on their site, so you can give it a try and see if it's really something that you would enjoy. Their contact information is listed in a sticky post at the top of this forum. After that, the best place to check is Craigslist to try and get temporary assignments that will give you the experience to apply at other companies.

Information courtesy of Iliketotype:

Description of financial transcription, or earnings calls:

Corporations announce their earnings publicly every quarter (in addition to filing SEC forms). They usually do it via a conference call, called a quarterly earnings conference call, and analysts for sure and probably stockholders can dial in to participate in the conference call.

They usually last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and consist of the chief financial officer and the CEO/president presenting the information, and then a question and answer session where participants in the call, usually analysts, can ask questions for the corporate people to answer.

Once you have experience with these and with the format you're instructed to use, they aren't that difficult except for two things: a lot of research is usually required for company subsidiary names, company product or brand names, etc., and the turn-around time is usually fast, like within 3 to 5 hours. The research is made easier if the company has a good website and is made much more difficult if it does not.

Any for NZ? International?

Hi jnmurra

This is a great list. I have checked a few - some servicing only US and Canada which is great for US and Canada.

It just occurred to me to ask before I go:

Do you know of any that hire internationally?

I will check out a few more of them.

Thanks

jnmurra 08-02-2009 03:25 PM

Hi NZ,

I can't take credit for the content as the members are the ones who put together the list. It was posted here by the previous owner of the board and when we made the switch this week, the formatting ended up totally screwed up, so I had to "fix it" and re-post.

I personally can't think of any companies off the top of my head that hire internationally; however, I'll keep my eyes open for you and let you know if I find any.

ANP transcriptions BEWARE

I DID AN INTERVIEW OF 90 MINUTES, AND MY TOTAL WORK SUMMED UP TO 101.OO AND I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ONE PENNY OF PAYMENT.

When I kept sending them emails about how I wanted a response about where my check was, they ignore me, but when I said I would report them to fraud and abuse, they send me this sob story notice: NOTICE THE TYPE ERROR IN THIS MESSAGE.
I am assuming you did not receive this email that wss set?

Hello All!

I wanted to start this email off by saying that ANP Transcriptions is just getting into our busy season. It is going to busy until the end of the year. We value your dedication and hard work. I know we have been slow to pay these past few months and we really appreciate your patience. I am sure most of you are aware that September and October were really slow months for us and therefore really slowed down our cash flow. On top of that, we did a large foreign language project for one of our clients and we came up very upside down. The expectation was to take the profit from the project and resolve the cash flow issue but that was not what happened. Instead it made the cash flow issue more of an issue. I can assure you that ANP is working to resolve the problem. The 2 main things we are doing are as follows:

1) We recently hired a new salesperson that is agressivly seeking new business and reviving inactive clients. In addition he is looking to secure some more government contracts. We are just starting to see the success form his hard work.
2) The obvious is that ANP is very busy again and we are on target in November to exceed what we did in September and October combined.

ANP Transcriptions has weathered many storms in the past, and we always make it through. We have been in business for 8 + years and as we have done in the past, we are in the process of changing our main focus and targeting a higher volume sector. We have done this a few times in our history and ANP Transcriptions always comes out on top.

During these very competitive / turbulent times we had to offer new and inactive clients much lower rates and longer payment terms that favor the client. This has helped to win the business back. What we have been seeing is that a lot of transcription companies are forcing their typists to work with the lower rates. Basically if you don't take the pay cut then you will be terminated.

ANP Transcriptions is not going to do this to it's loyal and dedicated staff. That I can assure you. Those of you that weather the storm with us will be eligible for a rate review in 6 months from December 1st.

I can assure you that I know the holidays are quickly approaching and we are doing everything possible to meet our obligations. I will be answering any questions and concerns starting on Monday.

Just a note to let folks know this one doesn't pay. Transcriptionista didn't "just find it." She ran it and owes lots of folks money. I don't think she is still operating but do beware!

CastingWords

I own CastingWords, a U.S.-based transcription company that was founded in 2005.

I'm a mom, and I work at home even, but not while my daughter is home (she nows goes to preschool during the day.) So I'm kind of a WAHM, technically speaking. ;-)

Anyway about us -- we post work in a few different places, including Amazon's Mechanical Turk, as well as our own website, workshop.castingwords.com. The CastingWords' workshop pays out using PayPal (no fees to you, just on our end). At either site you just pick and choose what you want to work on, when you want to work.

We are always looking for new transcribers and do not require that you pass any tests in order to start working for us. What we do is have other workers grade work, and leave feedback. We pay bonuses for each assignment based on the grade it gets. As you go up the ranks you can access the higher paying jobs.

You can also email us at [email protected] after you've done a few jobs, requesting that we up your score. This is recommended for those who do have prior experience. If you are just getting the hang of things, then doing a bunch of transcripts is the best way to establish a track record with us and move up the ranks.

thanks,
Rachel

ANP Is hiring Legal Typists

ANP have been awarded a long term, high volume contract with the state(5 years). We are looking to double our pool of typists, which is currently at about 50. The volume we are working with is pretty great and ANP is in a real growth phase. Vendors that do come to work for us can take as many hours they can handle per day. Work can be very steady or we can be flexible and work around your schedule

To make vendors feel more secure and comfortable about the decision to come work for us we have shortened our payment terms and offer direct deposit for invoices through IPN. I would be willing to discuss this more in detail with anybody that is interested. Just PM or email me directly at asuied at anptranscriptions.com

Hopefully this information will make potential candidates have less hesitation about coming to work for ANP.
