GIMP (Bitmap image editor):

Hugin (Panorama photo stitcher):

Exposure Blend (GIMP plugin, for doing High Dynamic Range):
JD Smith: Code - Exposure Blend

RawTherapee (for converting raw images):

Resynthesizer (GIMP plugin, useful for things like removing a sign):

This is not an editing software but here are 2 others.

First one will tell you where the sun/moon will rise and set. Give you civil twilight, the path the sun/moon will travel, etc. Really great for landscape shots. Its a free download unless you get it for your smartphone.

The Photographer's Ephemeris | Plan your shoot

Second is for the night sky lovers. This one will tell you what will see when you look up after dark. Great for getting those milky way shots if you live out of the city or other galaxy shots.

GIMP is a very handy software. For extremely beginners, photoscape can be a good tool which is very easy and quick.

Resynthesizer is a great plugin. It's very light and it has excellent features. I found it through this forum and definitely you deserve a thanks from me.

yes, GIMP is a very good tool for image editing. It is both for the professionals and beginners.
