The best thing I can tell you is to just keep your eyes open. Start a blog or put some articles on article directories so your potential clients can see your work. I don't really know much about technical writing as most of my writing has bee for the web. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for opportunities. Keep your eye on the writing folder on this forum. There's tons of info there.
