I worked for the state for 1 year of my life. I know that everyone thought I was crazy to quit, but the environment was exactly like you described it. I absolutely hated my job and most of the people I worked with. I know that I would not ever waste a year of my life like that again.

Interesting. My mom works for the state, but she's in a nice office and
does have family pics up. Guess it just depends on where. |

Man, my soul would die a little every day if I had to work someplace like that.

How sad for your mom!
I've never worked anywhere with such strict rules about work areas; modularized work stations yes, but not permitting personalization or family photos is ridiculous. Can't say I miss corporate office politics or atmosphere; not even the slightest. I do miss co-worker interaction though, but hey I have all of you and the dog to keep me company! I'm sure it varies for every state..it even varies for different agencies within the state here. It's up to each agency supervisor. Mom should be able to retire in a year or so. I hope she can, I feel bad for her.
