Default I need advice

I love hiking and we often travel with family outside the city. I have a big family, we have 7 people (me, my wife, two our children, my sister and her family) I think to buy a new tent. I saw in the store a tent for 10 people. Do you think it will be better than two tents for four?

Default It depends

I would recommend more than one tent. I think a minimum of 3 tents would be your best bet, so that you have some elbow room and can enjoy some private space.
While you would all probably fit in a 10-person tent, you have to consider that you will all be sleeping very close to one another, which could be a problem if you all have different bed and wake times. You’re going to be constantly climbing over each other or disturbing each other with conversations and/or noises made from movement. And that is just the few hours of sleeping. What is the plan if it rains? Is the tent your only shelter?

The reason why I recommend 3 or more tents rather than 2 4-person tents for 7 people is because the number of people the manufacturers say they can hold and the actual number of people that can make use of the space usually differs. Look at the box of a 4-person tent, and you will likely see the layout for 4 people is 3 people lined up next to each other, sleeping head to foot, while the fourth person is lying perpendicular to the line of 3, either across the back of the tent or across the doorway. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend more than 2 or possibly 3 people in a 4-person tent.

Why 3 tents? Well, depending on the camping area, you will need more than one place for 7 people to dress and undress. With 3 tents, you can allow the kids to have a space, and each of the pairs of adults to have their own spaces. Or you can have one tent per family. Personally, I think a fourth tent for gear and/or changing clothes would be ideal. That way, you can lay out tarp mats between the tents and specify absolutely no shoes allowed in the sleeping areas. This will minimize the dirt and sand in your tent.
