I think Dr Mercola (who is not actually a "real doctor) likes to cite his opinions as fact when in fact there is no scientific basic for it. He has some good points, but a lot of his material is biased with the intent of swaying the reader into buying hisproducts in place of the "evil" one he cites. He has some good stuff on his cite, but I take most of what he says with a grain of salt. Canola oil is a healthy oil. Now vegatable oil, that's the one you want to avoid IMO.

I also take everything he says with a grain of salt. He's way too over-the-top for me and seems to thrive on using alarm tactics. Not saying everything he says is bad or wrong. I just personally don't base any life altering decisions on his opinion. I use mainly olive oil, but do use canola without hesitation. I think it's another valuable source of healthy fats.

Well... I honestly don't see anything wrong with his site. He does state many resources & he's the one that went through many years of medical school, so i'm sure he knows what he is talking about.

I always though as Canola being healthy as well... it's good to read about the "other side" too sometimes.

I will defenitely be doing more research about this.

I wouldn't say he's not a "real" doctor. A medical doctor? No, but heis a doctor, a DO. BUT I also take what he writes about with a grain of salt and do additional checking from many different and credible sources. I mean he does have something to sell, and not that that's a bad thing in itself, it has to be taken into consideration.

For this particular article, the sources he cites are pretty old, so if he is using those as his only basis, then his opinion is based on outdated info.

As far as do I use it? 50% of the time and 50% of the time, I use olive oil. It just depends on what I'm cooking.

Thanks for you imput Jenn... I was re-reading through the article & he didn't write it actually. It was an article written by Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD that was featured in Nexus Magazine, Aug/September 2002 as well as in Wise Traditions. He just posted it, I suppose.

Yeah, most of the research is pretty old, although there were a few that were betwee 1998-2002.

I guess giving up canola oil was a bit drastic, huh... . I shouldn't worry though cause I use Olive oil 99% of the time. Just freaked out a bit when I read this:

Canola oil is a poisonous substance, an industrial oil that does not belong in the body. It contains "the infamous chemical warfare agent mustard gas," hemagglutinins and toxic cyanide-containing glycocides; it causes mad cow disease, blindness, nervous disorders, clumping of blood cells and depression of the immune system. This is what detractors say about canola oil.

Well, I mean, the thought of getting mad cow disease is enough to make ya freak!

I do think he probably does have some great knowledge to share, it's just that I think he could take a different approach and just offer his knowledge without scaring the bejesus out of people at the same time.

Yeah, I just now noticed that he wasn't the author, but since he's posting it on his site, then he endorses her opinion.

Seriously, don't freak - just do some additional research, which I know you will

Right that's what I meant, not an MD though he portrays himself as such. Not that it's a bad thing, but it's like that company Projoba International. They talk about how the company owner is DOCTOR Cory Gold, over and over emphasizing the DOCTOR part. Well yeah he's a "doctor" but not the kind you'd think of using for credibility in a nutritional company...he's a dentist! Or like "Dr." Earl Mindell of Freelife. Got busted on national TV because he was NOT an MD as the advertising would covertly have you believe.

Now I do like Mercola's stance on GMO but some of the stuff is a little out there. I do admire him for having the gumption to stand up for wht he believes in though and do refer to some of his articles often.

It's good to be informed and armed with all info possible (from all sides), but I wouldn't freak. I did find this if it helps at all:
