measure your body fat? I saw FVMom post about her weight, what part of that weight is fat and the percentage. I'm curious to know if there is a scale or something that does all that or is there a formula for it with a tape meausurer or something? How do you know when you add lean body mass and lose actual fat?

Sorry about asking yet another question but I know body fat percentage is important. I heard from Dr. Peeke who does Body for Life for Women that some people can be in their normal weight range but have really high body fat percentages. She said if your body fat is in the 20's and your waist measurement around your belly button is under 35 that you are doing good. So, I'd like to know where I stand on the body fat percentage thing. I know for a fact that my waist measurement is going to be a problem. Will find out how big a problem today, oh joy. lol

Hi Krystal,

Well, I bought one of those scales (I think it was around $40) that supposedly measures your weight, body fat, and hydration percentage back in December. I hated what it said as far as body fat %, but went with that. However, I just read about a month ago that those types of scales can be off by + or - 8%!!! That is a big % to be off by, so I sprung for a set of calipers from MDB for about $12 so that I could be as accurate as possible without paying to have hydrostatic weighing done. As far as I can tell, comparing the calipers and the scale reading, the scale is off about 5%.

I think the cheapest and yet more accurate way would be to go with the calipers. You can probably find them even cheaper on Ebay or somewhere else online.

If you are wanting to know if you're adding lean body mass while losing fat (or if you're losing muscle instead), you'll need to know your body fat %. There is a post here somewhere where Vilma laid it all out and gave some links where you can get a rough estimate of your body fat % online. You could use that until you get a set of calipers.

Yes, I have one the of scales that measures your body fast as well. I've had it for several years now. It's a lot higher than if I use the online estimates. I think I'm going to be purchasing one of the calipers from MDB just to see the difference.

I don't know that the body fat on my scale works at all right now, as I haven't changed much and have dropped 25.5 lbs. I find it odd that the BF% hasn't changed and I can tell that I'm toning. Also most things that are electronic like that need to be calibrated at some point too... I've never had anything like that done to my scale. (I'm thinking the scale is 6 years old).

What jen said is right. The cheapest & most accurate way to measure your body fat is the 3-7 site caliper test. A trained professional should do this test (you can find them at your local gym. Heads up though... they will probably charge a fee).

</font>The next best thing is the accumeasure caliper test which is a 1 site test that you can do in the privacy of your own home.

There are some pretty accurate online cicumference body fat calculators that you can try as well. These are the ones that I found to be pretty close to the 3-7 site calipers, hydrostatic weighting, &amp;

best bet if you dont really want to spend money on the calipers (although I do recommend it).</font>

Whew Vilma! Thanks!!! I'll see what I can do about all that!! I do want to know what exactly my body consists of so I know where it needs to be and what I need to do to change it besides just working out.

You're welcome Krystal.

IMHO, I would recommend that you start with one option &amp; stick to that for now until you can get your BF% professionally measured.

The point of this is to have constant feed back from the same source.

I personally use the online BF% calculators on weelkly basis &amp; do accumeasure &amp; get my reading on BIA machine once a month.

When I reach my ultimate goal, I want to do the hydrostatic weighing because it's the most accurate on the market.

I have a Taylor Body Fat Scale (I looked online and it is actually more acurate than the more expensive one surprisingly) and it is right on the money. I get the same reading on it as I get from the biofitness site.

ETA: My body fat scale is programmable too which is probably why it's so accurate. You have to input your height, age, gender, and status (ahtelet or average)Edited by: FV Mom

Hey, FVMom, I had to input all of that too and mine still is inaccurate. It'sa Health-O-Meter, I think? Anyway, I don't trust it now

I have found the online measurements closer, but are still off by at least +2%.

No, no, I meant mine is a Health-O-Meter. I wasn't positive that was the name, that's why I put the question mark. I went and checked and that's what mine is.
