I really want to start doing Medical Billing and Coding or transcription from home. But I have no idea where to start, I know I have to do schooling, but are there actual places that hire. And will school be the only thing I need if I dont have previous experience! Thank you

I would honestly say that if you are going to go to school for anything you should go for your RHIT, here in Tx it takes 2 years. I just graduated with certified medical coding and certified medical transcription, and have allpied till my ears bleed and cannot find anything. plus what they don't tell you in school is that after you graduate you have to wait 3 months to take the state boards for coding so that you can become a CCS(certified coding specialist) but you have to register through AHIMA and pay 500.00 to take the boards. Every on I have talked to about working from home doing transcription wants me to have at least 2-5 years of experience but I cannot get that unless I get hired, and therefore they want me to volunteer so that I can get my experience, but if I am like you, I want to get paid for my work.

I agree....I have coded for almost 15 years off and on. I currently work from home for ahospitaland love it. I was the first one to work from home...have come a long way. I am not certified but would like to take the CCS exam next year.
Get your RHIT and go from there.

I started school for medical billing and coding.. I could not finish but I went through the american acadamy of Professional Coders and am taking a class. I am thankful I had medical terminology before. The best thing about this class once certified, it counts as 1 year experience.

In order to do billing from home all you really need is motivation. I can set you up with a great company for billing as far as software goes. Get yourself some business cards and market yourself accordingly. Of course you need to know what your doing and how to answer questions you will be asked.

Last but not least you need to be focused. Get your company info together and create it with a tax id and any liscense you need for your area.

Basically I got laid off from my job asmanager doingmedical billing and coding. I decided the market to find a new job was very hard so I created a website, got business cards and liscense that were needed in my area to do it from home.

I started cold calling offices and mailing out postcards until I got an overwhelming amount of responses. I then had to hire 2 people to work from home doing what I do. I eventually want to further my business even more.

If you have questions you can PM me.

I am a bit confused, someone told me on another wahm board that you can no longer do billing/coding from home because of HIPAA. I guess I ought to research it a bit more.
