I have just started promoting mine also. I made up personal or business profiles. The personal ones I link any business pages to. My site is now live (with pre-registration) but once we open it up to bidding in the next few weeks I have a spreadsheet already made up to post to different locations daily.

Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, about.me, LinkedIn, twitter

I also wrote a few press releases that got published.

We have over 50 people already pre-registered and we will only have 365 day open for bids or outright purchases. So I'm confident that we hit a good niche in what I have been doing so far. On yes, also everything has been free and me manually doing it. Until we get bids and get them paid we don't get paid..so for now...it's all me baby!!

Get out there and post on different sites, forums, groups, social media, etc. that allows it. Don't spam. Contribute to the various topics.

Try finding places where peoiple may be interested in your product or service. Learn a bit about SEO so people can find you in search engines.

Where's your signature? It works on this site too! I've had other small businesses (and a couple blogs that I no longer have due to lack of time) and I used to get a lot of traffic from here. People are always clicking on siggys. I know I do!

It's been awhile since I've done the whole business thing but I liked FB. Mostly to keep my clients updated. I'm starting over with something else (volunteer project) and will be using it for updates. I hear pintercrest can help. Not familiar with it though. Will have to play around with it and see if it helps. Twitter never helped me but some people swear by it.
I have mixed feelings about Craigslist. I used to get a lot of dead end leads. It didn't help my business. I'm going to give it another try with my volunteer job. It doesn't hurt to try.
