This is not an editing software but here are 2 others.

First one will tell you where the sun/moon will rise and set. Give you civil twilight, the path the sun/moon will travel, etc. Really great for landscape shots. Its a free download unless you get it for your smartphone.

The Photographer's Ephemeris | Plan your shoot (http://photoephemeris.com/)

Second is for the night sky lovers. This one will tell you what will see when you look up after dark. Great for getting those milky way shots if you live out of the city or other galaxy shots.

Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org/)

GIMP is a very handy software. For extremely beginners, photoscape can be a good tool which is very easy and quick.

On the Toolbox window when you have the Text tool selected below that it'll say Text. Next to were it says Font it shows Aa for the font, click there to change it. The border you are seeing just means that is selected. Allowing you to move it around and such.

no, i found something else for watermarking - I did that - but I wasn't sure how to make that text super light (almost faded)
nor the main watermark

I wish photoshop wasn't so expensive

Click on the color and drag the sliders over until you get the lightness you want.

What kind of watermark are you trying to do? Do you have an example?

I don't know how many of you use video or want to create videos, but this site offers a way to build free videos (under 30 seconds I believe). Animoto - Video Slideshow Maker with Music (http://animoto.com/)

You can add images and music as well, it could be a nice way to create video slide shows of your photography work. Then post to YouTube for possible leads and another traffic source.
