I sort of hit a plateau and my sister is buying me the first two months of karate classes for my birthday. A friend of mine owns a karate studio (so I know he won't be easy on me http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)and the classesare three evenings a week. The classes include cardio, stretching and I believe some strength training before the actual class. I think the classes are 2 hours long. So if I did the three nights and alternated going to the gym on the other days (with a day of rest), would that help shake up my plateau? I'm thinking certain muscles would get a rest every other day, which I know would is supposed to be good. I have always wanted to take karate and after losing 50 pounds, I think I am FINALLY ready for it. Also, I try to do 90 min. of cardio when I am at the gym. When I start karate, would cutting my cardio at the gym down to 60 min. be wise? Or should I keep it up to 90 min. to help keep burning the rest of the fat on my body and then cut back when I am at my goal, just to maintain? I know this is the place to go for questions!! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

You may have hit a plateau because you were doing too much of the same things with your exercising and eating. By talking the karate class, you will be challenging your muscles in ways that you haven't before so that should kick your metabolism up. The trainer at the wellness center says strength training is super important because while it may not burn a ton of calories like cardio, it works the muscles and really revs up your metabolism!
I don't know if you want to still do 90 at the gym. That may be too much! You don't want to over stress out your body! I would say see what happens the first week and judge how you feel from there!
Have fun in karate class...not only will you be getting buff but learning how to kick some BUTT!Edited by: OrangeSmoke20

Thank you so much, Dawn! That's what I thought that maybe I'm doing too much of the same thing. See, you guys have taught me something! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifI think I might cut back on the cardio. I was doing it to help burn off the rest of the fat on my body and when I was at a good place, I was gonna cut back. The class is actually only an hour, maybe a little over but there was definitely variety as well as lots of flexibility involved. I'm gonna be so sore in the morning! Hahaha!
