View Full Version : Running for Beginners

Ok, if some of ya'll can stay accountable by writing a journal on your "journeys"....I think I'll do the same!

I want to run a 5k this Fall.http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif I am no where near in shape! I haven't run since I was very young...which was Very Long Ago!

I bought a Beginner's Running Guide last year (by Hal Higdon - Runner's World). It's only a 36 page booklet, but it contains info on how to get into shape to run a 5k.

The first 30 days is a 30/30 plan - very basic. Each session is 30 minutes each day - 7 days a week. The first 10 minutes is only walking. The next fifteen minutes is broken up into 30 seconds jogging - 30 seconds walking. The last 5 minutes are walking only.

So, yesterday was day one - Thought I was going to die! Even tho I've been walking for the past two weeks now, it's not the same as jog/walk/jog/walk!

I do need to invest in a good pair of shoes - that is on my "to do" list in the next couple of weeks. I also need a pair of shorts that don't rub the inside of my legs - the seam is killing me!

Honestly, I never thought I would run - never anything I wanted to do before - but for some reason I really-really-really want to run a 5k - not win, just start and finish!! So, day 1 down and I'm still alive!(barely)

Day 2 - May 24 .... My babies' Birthday !! He turned Sweet 16 !!! We had a few of his friends over for swimming, chili dogs, cake and ice cream. The kids had a blast! I ate a chili dog and chips but no cake and ice cream.I like cake with butter cream frosting - but my husband bought a cake with the the whipped icing http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif-

I did my 30 minutes on the treadmill - I'd rather exercise outside, but by the time the party was over, it was getting dark and a storm was blowing in!

I'm am sooo sore! This program is going to whip me into shape!!

This is a plan that really works for me...
<ul> The Couch-to-5K running plan </font> (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)- beginnerís running schedule has helped new runners get off the couch and onto the roads, running 3 miles in just two months.</font>[/list]AWESOME interval training too!

Thanks Vilma!
The second phase of my program lasts 6 wks and the third phase lasts 8 wks.

My son is wanting to run Cross Country competition when school starts in Aug. The school doesn't really have a "program" per sa, so I'm going to find one for him. I had one when our daughter ran CC - she had a terrific coach! Actually our daughter had a schlorship to run CC and turned it down http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif - she loved to run but was sick of competing.

I'm not a lover of running... I acutally prefer doing OTHER things before running... however, this plan has made me enjoy it more than I ever had.

I still don't love it though.smileys/smiley36.gif

All the best to you as you embark in this running program.

Day 3 - May 25

Ok, so I had to roll out of bed this morning http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif.... yes, I'm sore. I did my 30 minutes this morning - the jogging is killing my boobs...I really must get a better sports bra!! I've know for a while how out of shape I am, but trying to jog...even a slow jog...proves it! I had to do 15 sec walk 15 sec jog this morning.

This is really tough for me, I'm soooo not a morning person! But, I just keep the mental picture of me finishing my first 5K in the front of my mind !

After I run my first one, I may never run another one....but, I will run one this fall !!

Girl, I'm busty too! What works for me is wearing an underwire regular bra, or even a nursing/maternity bra underneath either a sports bra, or a spandex shirt with a built is sports bra. It keeps the girls from going their separate ways!smileys/smiley36.gif

Day 4 - May 26:
Mid morning workout - Rodger is at work, Jonathan is at the lake - Candace came in to spend the night then off to Texarkana to help her roommate paint the house they are renting. So, I have the house all to myself - Quiet Time !!

I am hoping my soreness goes away soon. It's really not as bad today. But, Monday I'm going to "try" to do watp in the mornings and my beginners running program at night. That way I'll get in more exercise time during the week. Yes, I'm not really patient. See, I want it NOW! Can't help it, It's almost addictive. I do work fulltime during the day, so early morning http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gifand late evenings are my only choices.

I do have my swimming pool open now. I will probably try to incorporate that into my exercise program too. However, right now the water is still just too cold for me!

I'm not a real healthy eater, but I am counting calories - so at least that's a good start. It does make me more aware of what I put in my mouth !!

Our son just turned 16 Thurs - but I did really good on my calories that day. Our Daughter turns 20 on June 3. She will be moving back that weekend.....so, the next weekend she and I will probably has a mother/daughter day out - at Olive Garden http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif I'll have to watch my daily calories that week - I'll probably "bank" a few so I'll have a few extra to spend at Olive Garden !!

Good job girl. I just saw your post and you are doing great.. Good shoes and bra are key though, seriously. I'm very very large on top and my OB actually recommended a place to buy sports bra's and the two I have bought I love them. It's called Title 9. They rate the bra's by supportiveness. I've called them to see what they recommend and have had to return one and they are great about returns too.

Good job and keep up the good work.

Day 5 - May 27
Day 6 - May 28
Day 7 - May 29

Ok, I really wanted to be lazy those days - but I didn't. I did my walk/jog - I'm really getting tired of my treadmill tho. I would like to do my 30 minutes outside, but I just don't want anyone looking at me yet http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

We live out in the country, but there's usually people driving by and I just know they will look and laugh - not ready for that yet!

I'm not the most graceful when exercising. I'm really doing pretty good with my walking/jogging. I feel like my lungs are getting healthier.

I'm not really worried about my weight or inches at this point. I just want to get thru my 30 day program.

I just went back to running. It's tough to get back in shape but it's worth it.I've been running for a three weeks again.I can see and feel a difference. You can do it. Keep us updated.

I'm following you, Deadra. I'm only on day 2 (tomorrow) though, because the weather here has been bad.

One thing I noticed during my run yesterday is that it's harder to get to max HR than it was last summer. I guess being a cardio queen has it's drawbacks ... I'm in good condition so now I have to work even harder. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Oh well ... my SIL wants me to do a half marathon with her in September. Yeah right ... on HER part. *I'll* be ready! http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif

ETA: I was thinking about how you don't want people looking at you when you're running outside, so I thought I'd give you a laugh. I guess it's only funny if you listen to hip hop or listen to Ludacris ...

... but I have a pair of running shorts that has PAPERMAKERS in white letters across the bum. The papermakers are our highschool sports team name.

I just have to laugh when I think how people passing in cars must be watching me shake my papermaker as I run. Then I get that song going through my head ... "shake, shake, shake your PAPERMAKER" (instead of Moneymaker). ah, yes, I'm easily amused. http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifEdited by: chrlstoncharmed

Too funny Melle !!!

I'd like to run 1/2 a marathon someday. First I just gotta get my 5k down!

May 30 - Day 8
May 31 - Day 9
June 1 - Day 10
June 2 - Day 11

Good days! I'm not up to the walk 30 sec, jog 30 sec yet - But I'm getting there. It's more like walk 30 sec, jog 15 http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

I may have to go follow my 30 day plan40 days. But that's ok.

I really think I would do better outside!! My treadmill is so constricting - It's 16 years old, I bought it at Wal-Mart when I was pregnant with my son! I shouldn't complain tho- it's been a good one - it's not fancy but it still works!!!

Thanks Jay - how long have you been running?

We use to go to our daughter's Cross Country competitions - I be on the sidelines cheering her on and wishing I could run like that! She looked as tho she was running in slow motion but she'd be passing the few that were ahead of her!! She always started out in the front of the pack because she set her pace - she never had any "kick" at the end but she could run 10 miles at her pace - just amazed me. Our son is different, he can start out at the back and make his way up front then "kick" at the end!

I don't know what kind of runner I'll be - probably won't be graceful tho - I'm clumsy!!http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

I'm trying to talk my husband into training with me. He walks a lot at his job and can outwalk me!

Oh something funny....the belt on my treadmill sometimes slips if I don't keep it lubricated like I'm suppose to. Well, guess what....it slipped the other morning and I nearly went flying off that thing - arms and legs were going everywhere!!! I didn't hurt myself, but....I did the most natural thing after it happened .... I looked around to make sure no one saw me http://www.wahm.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

June 3 - June 9 - Days 13-18.... Good workouts.

June 9 - Big Problem.....A stainless steel pipe fell on my foot!!!! OMG it hurt sooooooo bad. From my ankle to my toes is black and blue PLUS there is a big knot where it hit me!!!

I had a vacuum cleaner attachment on a shelf in my closet - well my son had moved things around and didn't put them back where they belonged - when I opened the door, the attachment pipe fell and hit my foot!!

I can't even get my running shoe on - It is soooo swollen.

I can still walk on it - slowly. I've got that "Festus" limp going on!

So, my running has come to a halt for now. I'll pick it back up as soon as I can get my shoe on without much pain! In the meantime, I'm still walking my 30 minutes for the woman challenge - just a much slower pace!!

06-12-2007, 08:20 AM
Oh Deadra... i'm sorry to hear about your hurt foot. I really hope you feel better soon!

Make sure you follow the R.I.C.E. method for faster recovery time:

Hope you feel better soon!
