Smile Can any affiliate marketing veterans answer a couple of questions for me? :)

Hello everyone! I have been starting to get my feet wet with the affiliate marketing thing. I have a couple of questions:

re clickbank: can I use the name of the product in my domain name or is that a copywrite issue?

If I find a physical product I want to promote (it's a meal replacement shake) should I make a review site for that product, or make a review/comparison site for it and a couple of other shakes, or should I make a blog about wellness or diets or gluten-free or something like that and then just put an ad for it on my site? I feel like a review site would get a lot more conversion as opposed to a blog because people who look at a review site are actually looking to buy, and ppl who read blogs are just wanting info. Am I right? What is my best bet just starting out?

I would appreciate any input or comments...

Brondie,

Good questions.

For the first question, I want to ask you - have you consulted odigger to see if clickbank is giving the best commissions in the first place?

Also - you don't want to use the name of the product in the domain name because that does give run into copywriting issues.

Additionally, you'll want to cloak any affiliate links you have.

In addition, before you do ANY affiliate marketing, you need to make sure you have found a keyword that is in the niche that follows 3 specific metrics to even know if it is a market you should promote.

It needs to be in demand - in the microniche level (not too much demand, otherwise you'll have too much competition). Competition, actually is the second metric - you need to make sure people are able to find you.

The 3rd metric is commercial intention as you need to make sure people are BUYING that keyword and not just 'learning'. (Yes, they can learn when they type it in, but they cannot exclusively just learn something simple like: getting rid of hiccups)

Once you've established a keyword, then you need to make sure you do have a platform - a blog is fine, but not blogger. I recommend wordpress.org as you can have your pillar posts, and then your link pyramid linking to your category pages.

When you have your main niche keyword and your product, it's not just 'one review' on 'one product'. You're doing a niche, giving a lot of authority, because Google doesn't want just a cookie-cutter site.

When you've established that you have all original, well-written content in this structure, you can have a lot of traffic and conversions.

Then you can do it over and over again.

Personally, though, I prefer going the other way in Affiliate marketing- WRITING the clickbank books and having others sell them.

But, if you're going to promote a clickbank product - that is how you sell it on a site in a pretty effective way.

I would not recommend using a name of a product in your domain.

And I would not recommend building a site around a product. You should build it around a topic (like wellness/diet/gluten free). As long as you optimize your blog posts/pages, you should have no problem. And no, people who read blogs are definitely shopping

And one other reminder that I think we both forgot to mention - MAKE SURE YOU ARE CAPTURING LEADS!

Have a way to get leads so you can generate a list! Have you ever heard the phrase 'the money is in the list?' well it is true.

It helps engage your audience and bring traffic to your site over and over.

You can do this with or without a sale.

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish - using the name within your domain may or may not be creating copyright issues depending on the name & the 'common use' of the term (or name) ...

But more importantly - you are 'betting the farm' on one product following this path. Often we really don't know the results until we promote and test our marketing efforts. I've been in marketing since the late 80s and I am still surprised at times as to what advertising methods & products actually sell the best. And this can vary widely product to product and year to year..... consumers are as finicky online as offline.

Over the years, I've used websites, blogs, and pretty much all of the advertising vehicles that are out there. Because I love flexibility - I don't tie myself to one site or product. And I have found more $$ success in promoting single products without websites or blog costs - hands down.

But I still do create various blogs for the purpose of affiliate marketing for clients and am playing with the idea of starting a new website for myself which would be based around a TOPIC - so I can change products/ services/ programs as I deem fit. The reason really isn't because I'll make more money - but more because I enjoy the creating aspect. That's why it's important to pick topics you really are passionate about because it does take a lot of work to build traffic- - so maybe I'll wait till after Christmas for the blog/site & promote various links other ways before the holidays to pad my bank acct..... choices, choices, choices..... I think of Affiliate Marketing as a Game.....

Lots of great advice here...

Here's my 2 cents...

1) About domain names

If you can get a generic name that will fit the product, you'll be able to switch it to a different product if the original one goes out of business... (and some of them do) or if you get disenchanted with it for some reason or find a better converting one.

Also, that way you won't have to worry about copyright, though I suspect that the risk with CB product is fairly small - they want you to promote their stuff any way you can. And if in doubt, you can ask them too! That's what their support email is for.

2) About list building

I totally believe in building a list while you're at it. And with CB products or other info products especially, but others too, it is helpful to create a pre-sell report that you give away in exchange for people signing up for your list.

Then you follow up and provide more info as well as encourage them to try out the product...

You are on the right track! Review sites are just the best way to get traffic to your offers. There is a course called, "The Unstoppable Affiliate", and these guys will make it super duper clear for you! They did for me. Basically, they teach you how you can set up as many of these review sites as you want to make as much money as you want. They will give you all the techniques from setting up your site properly (and this is a huge point) to how to monetize and where and how to get traffic. All the best!

"just the best way"?? I agree (maybe <grin>), but only partly, and only in some very specific cases. Problem is you have to do some really good keyword research and competition analysis then you have to do all that slooowwww SEO rubbish (in an ever changing search engine environment) to get decent numbers of people to your review site. Remember that, for most offers, review sites are a dime a dozen.

Don't believe me?

Type 'your offer review' into Google and prepare to be amazed , or frustrated

So, really, review sites are only one of many ways to get people to view your offers.

Whatever you decide make sure you are using an autoresponder to capture your visitors details and to followup with them!

Both, actually.

In the past, you could get away with one long page or 2-3 pages for the entire review site of just a couple products.

Let's say you have 2 products that are similar.
You could create pages for:
Product 1
Product 2
A review, comparing products 1 & 2.

So that's at least 3 pages, which will cover people searching for info on the specific products, as well has reviews/comparisons of them.

Further pages you could write:
A page explaining what to look for or avoid, for the overall product type.
Step by step usage of a product
How to care for the product
Even pages in which you comment about the latest studies or product releases.

As you add more products, continue the process, so you end up with quite a list of products and total pages.

*Every thing that you can possibly rewrite, should be rewritten. It is growing increasingly important, since the latest Google updates. Rewrite descriptions, other reviews you're referencing, product titles, etc. It must be original. Show that you've actually reviewed the product, if possible, such as the taste of the shake. Also, you talking about it with a picture (even better a picture of you holding the products), rather than simply having an ad on your site. Now, you could include picture links to your reviews of the products, maybe as a sidebar.


***Be very careful about your reviews and testimonials, since Google, as well the government, is coming down on "fake reviews". This is one of the reasons why Google is going to include people's face/name showing their Google+ rating of it.

Put simply:

1. Never use product names in your domain name (cyber squatting). All the work and traffic you put into the domain can be taken away.

2. Single review sites and comparison sites work equally well. I tend to favour comparison sites of 3 to 5 related products, though.
