Using the Internet to Advertise Your Sewing Business


You have taken the steps to begin your own sewing business. You know that advertising is essential to the success of any business, and in today's world, technology is a big part of advertising. How can you use online marketing to advertise your home sewing business?

Use Blogs

Blogs are everywhere. Take advantage of this by advertising your sewing business on blogs related to the sewing you do. Search for blogs relevant to your type of sewing (for instance, you might look for doll/toy blogs if you make doll clothing). Contact the blog owner to ask about advertising your business on her blog. You might also offer items to blog owners as giveaways in exchange for posts about your product. Often, blog giveaways give a business a lot of exposure. You may even want to offer a discount to anyone ordering if they learned about you from a particular site, perhaps by giving each blog a unique discount code to use when ordering. This is an excellent way to track where your customers are coming from.

Build a Website

Don't let others have all the fun of blogging. Your sewing business will benefit if you create a website or blog specifically for your home sewing business. Blogger and Wordpress offer free blog set-ups, and sites such as offer inexpensive website addresses.  A website or blog of your own gives you an online marketing presence; a place to show photographs of the sewing items you are selling, as well as a place to post customer testimonials, shipping rates and more. A further advantage to having a website is that it will give you an online address to list on business cards, thereby creating an easy way for potential home sewing customers to learn more about your business.

Become a "Regular" on Forums/Bulletin Boards

Search online to find forums and bulletin boards related to the home sewing you are promoting. For instance, if you are selling wedding apparel, search to find forums and online bulletins boards frequented by brides-to-be. While many of these websites will not directly allow advertising, if you post frequently you can establish your identity as an expert in the field of home sewing. You will most likely be allowed to have your home sewing business website in your signature line. This is another way to find new customers and to advertise your business.

Use Social Media

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube (and other social networking sites) are growing in popularity. Why not use their wide reach to help advertise your home sewing business? They are free, and quick tweets/postings are an easy way to generate buzz about the latest sewing project you have for sale.


You may wish to join LinkedIn or another business networking site to search for other home sewing entrepreneurs. Yahoo Groups is another site to search for people interested in your niche of the sewing business. Networking can help your business by connecting you with others who have similar enterprises.
