Spaghetti Sauce

This is a hearty spaghetti sauce that is great over all types of noodles or you can even use it in lasagna. I get a request for this spaghetti at least once a week. It is sure to become a favorite in your home as well.

1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 pound Italian sausage or Italian flavored turkey sausage
2 cups onion, chopped
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup carrot, chopped
6 cloves garlic, chopped
2 28 ounce cans diced tomatoes
2 6 ounce cans tomato paste
1 cup dry red wine
3 tablespoons dried basil
2 tablespoons dried oregano
3 bay leaves
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon white sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

Brown both meats in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion, celery and carrot and sauté until tender. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste and red wine and bring spaghetti sauce to a boil. Reduce to medium low heat, add basil, oregano, bay leaves, red pepper flakes and sugar and simmer for 45 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaves. Season spaghetti sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
