Scentsy: A WAHM's Guide

Scentsy is a direct sells business opportunity of the party planning genre. The company began in 2003 with a simple idea that proved to be ingenious. Kara Egan, a stay at home mom, was inspired by an Oprah episode on "Million Moms" and decided to venture out with her idea of selling broken pieces of scented candles for melting in potpourri warmers. She and her sister in law, Colette Gunnell, founded the company and began selling their wickless candles and low-watt bulb warmers.

In 2004, Orville Thompson bought the company, and later launched Scentsy, the party planning business for which original founders Kara and Collette are both current consultants. As a Scentsy consultant, you are given the same opportunity to generate income through selling the company's products, which include an array of beautifully designed warmers and fragrances.

Starting Out

As a Scentsy consultant, you work for yourself, though you sell the company's products. To become a consultant, you must contact a current Scentsy consultant by calling or visiting their website. If you don't know anyone in the business, finding a consultant is easy. Just visit the company's website and do a search for consultants in your area or visit the Scentsy section of our WAHM forum.

You'll also be required to pay a start up fee of $99, which gets you your starter kit. Your kit will include tester and demo products, as well as business supplies. Additionally, you'll receive your own website (which is free for the first 3 months and $10 a month after that), a virtual workstation to organize and run your business (also known as a back office), plus free credit card processing; you won't have any inventory piling up in your home. Your sponsor (the consultant you sign up under) will provide you with the training that will assist in your direct selling success.

As a Scentsy consultant, you are paid 20%-30% commission on your own sales and receive bonuses for the sales made by those who sign up under you upon becoming a lead consultant (earning at least $500 in personal retail sales and $1000 in Group Wholesale Volume each month). You will be required to submit at least $150 every three months to remain an active consultant, but how much you earn is entirely up to you and how you choose to run your personal Scentsy business. Commission checks are mailed on the 10th of each month, and you must earn at least $30 to make pay out.

Thriving as a Scentsy consultant depends upon your sales and your sales depend upon your personal investment in your business. Finding people who are interested in hosting parties and in the business opportunity will increase your income and build your team - both of which are fundamental to your success.

Is It for You?

While you don't have to be a die hard sales person to succeed with Scentsy, you will need to be a people person. If you love scented candles and sharing your time with others, you'll find it easy to talk about the products without feeling like you are pushing purchases on them.
