How to Start a Wedding Planning Business

 

There are very minimal costs involved whenever you decide to start a wedding planning business.  However, there are some steps that you will need to take to set up your business and ensure success.

Get Experience

In order to start a wedding planner business, you are going to need to start by getting experience.  To do this, you will want to attend as many weddings as possible where you can talk to those vendors who are involved, including caterers, florists and photographers.  This is your chance to get as many contacts as you can since you will need them later on. 

Get Certified

You may also want to take some classes at a local college about wedding planning during this time. This is your opportunity to actually become a certified wedding planner, which will be beneficial to you; a lot of people will be hesitant to pay you good money without a certification.

Decide What Services to Offer

It is important to decide what type of services you want to offer.  These can be:

  • Complete wedding planning services.  You would coordinate the entire wedding including choosing the wedding's theme, creating a guest list, establishing a budget and helping with the marriage license.
  • Partial wedding planning services.  Here you simply help the bride and groom find the best vendors within their budget.                  
  • Services for only the rehearsal dinner and wedding day. Your job here would be to coordinate the rehearsal dinner and check to ensure that the vendors are in place for the wedding day.

 

Create a Portfolio

You will need to create a portfolio to show your potential clients.  If you haven't yet had any clients, you can volunteer to do the wedding planning for your family and friends in order to be able to put together a portfolio.  Herein, you will want to put pictures of every part of the wedding that you were involved in helping with.  You should also include reference letters from satisfied clients.

Find Clients

Now that you have your business ready, it is time to actually go out and start finding clients.  The most effective way to do this is via networking with other professionals who work in this industry.  You will also want to make sure that your business cards are readily available in a visible location at bridal shops, caterers, community centers, florists and libraries. It is also a good idea to advertise in your local newspaper. Word of mouth (the best way to secure clients) will soon follow.

One of the best things about owning your own wedding consultant business is that you will be able to help people make important decisions about the happiest day of their lives. Putting in the leg work to get your stay at home business off of the ground will pay off in the end.
