How to Go to Sleep Early and Change Your Schedule

With all the pressures in your life, you may have trouble figuring out how to go to sleep early. Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day for you, between taking care of the kids, your business or job, finding time for your husband and running errands. If you really want to adjust your sleep schedule, here's some advice to help you out:

Take Naps

This sounds counter-intuitive, but it really helps for some people. You might not be getting to sleep early at night because of stress. Sneaking in a short power nap during the afternoon can actually help you to refocus your mind for the rest of the day. This will help you be more productive and less stressed at bedtime and will help you to fall asleep. You can even drink a cup of coffee right before going down for a 30-minute nap. It takes about that length of time for the caffeine to kick in and will help you wake up refreshed. Studies have shown that short naps during the day can actually help some people get more healthy sleep at night.

Cardio Exercise

A solid workout routine can help you go to sleep early at night. Get in the habit of going through a heavy cardiovascular workout, preferably first thing in the morning. The point is to bring your system to the point of exhaustion, so you'll have no choice but to go to sleep in the evening. You'll still have enough energy to carry out the rest of your tasks for the day, but by the time your head hits the pillow at night, you'll be more than ready to sleep.

See a Nutritionist

Adjusting your diet might be a part of learning how to go to sleep early. Visit a nutritionist who does blood work, and find out if something about your diet is keeping you awake at night. Many people have an intolerance to certain foods and don't even know it. You might have too many carbohydrates or sugars in your diet, which are preventing you from sleeping. A nutritionist can help you pinpoint any irregularities and can even suggest foods that might help to make you drowsy at night.

Music to Help You Sleep

Purchase CDs or MP3s of soothing music to help you go to sleep at night. Another option is to find CDs of white noise, such as sounds of rainfall or static. Playing these at night can help some people relax enough to fall asleep.

Adjust Your Bedroom

If your bedroom allows in too much light, it could be affecting your sleep schedule. There might be a streetlight that brightens the room, or your curtains might be opaque enough to let too much light in. Darker curtains help to blot out the light and aid some people in falling asleep.

Figuring out how to go to sleep early can be a process of trial and error. Try some or all of these methods until you find out what works best for you.
