How to Determine the Cost of a Surrogate Mother

Although they may be high in cost, surrogate mother services are indispensable for some people who are looking to start a family, but are unable to conceive or carry a child to term. The surrogacy process is long and involved, and there are many different expenses to consider. Although each case is different, the following are the basic expenses associated with surrogacy.

Surrogate Mother's Fee

The surrogate mother will charge a fee for her services. This typically includes compensation for the pregnancy and is separate from other medical expenses. This fee will vary significantly depending upon the surrogate herself, but is often anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars.

Pre-Pregnancy Expenses

Before the surrogate mother can have the fetus implanted in her womb, you'll need to pay for a battery of different tests to ensure her health and to be sure that the implantation itself will be successful. Additionally, you'll have to pay for the services of a fertility specialist, who will conduct the fertilization and the in vitro implantation.

During and after the Pregnancy

The major expense during the pregnancy will be medical costs for the surrogate. It's also common for parents using a surrogate to cover a wide variety of other expenses, including food and other costs as well. These will have to be negotiated on an individual basis. The costs associated with labor and post-labor medical treatments will also fall to the parents as well.

Together, the costs of using a surrogate mother can be tens of thousands of dollars. For this reason, it's important to consider every facet of the process carefully before you begin.
