Finding Freelance Work: How to Create Your Online Portfolio

An online portfolio will help you sell yourself and is a great way for you to showcase your work to prospective clients and customers. Online presence is important because everything nowadays seem to happen over the Internet. Don't be left out and start creating your online portfolio. And, you don't have to be an online geek to make one. Assuming that you have already chosen your web host or domain, the following are the key elements to consider when creating an online portfolio:

Start with a Logo

If you're a group of freelance graphic artists or if you're starting an online small business, a logo is one of the important things to consider. When thinking of creating one, it should represent you as a brand and should be recognizable by clients. You can place the logo within your header or on the top left corner of your site.

Optimize the "About" Page

The "About" page is usually the first part that viewers look into; its ability to sell you and works should not be underestimated. The following questions by potential clients should be addressed in the "About" page:

  • Who is the person behind the portfolio?
  • What are his qualifications?
  • Is he reliable and trustworthy?
  • What projects has he done in the past?
  • Where can I see examples of his previous work?
  • Is he looking into getting new projects?

You can add a "Testimonials" page from previous clients to answer questions about reliability and trustworthiness. If you're still starting as a freelancer, you can include a paragraph that shows you're a decent and normal person.  A link to your gallery of previous works can be placed on the last part of the "About" page.  You might want to add a PDF version of your resume, too.

Be Clear on the Contact Page

This portion of your website should be straightforward and clean. You can place your name and significant contact details such as telephone number, email address and instant messaging. A short form to fill out for visitors who want to ask you questions related to your work can also be included.

Enumerate Your Services

It is also important for you to be clear with the services you are providing. Let your prospective clients know of the things you can do for them. A cool way of doing such is by using thumbnails. There are also several freelancers who arrange them in a list with corresponding costs, too. A quote request form may prove useful as well.

Include a Call to Action Banner

Your Call to Action Banner should be visible yet subtle at the same time, too. Call to Action statements includes Order Now, Purchase Now or Contact Now.

Display Your Social Media Accounts

Social Media accounts such as Twitter, MySpace and Facebook should be displayed on your web portfolio. This will show potential clients that you are currently in sync with the trends and specifically, with their target market. These sites will also serve as another venue for them to contact you plus they get to read testimonials from previous clients, too.
