Be a Better Worker by Performing Semi-Annual Self Evaluations

You're accountable to yourself when you work from home, and self evaluations may be what you need to help improve your work. Customer feedback and surveys are even more important, but they don't address how well you work. That's the purpose of completing self evaluations.

Benefits of Semi-Annual Self Evaluations

Many employers request self evaluations from employees once a year. A year is a long time when you're self employed, and it can be too late to turn things around after a year. Semi-annual self evaluations are better suited for you when you're self employed because it's long enough to make and evaluate changes. Monthly or quarterly self evaluations are too quick for what you need, because you may not have enough of a change in between evaluations to assess your progress. You'll also get tired of doing it and eventually you won't find the time for it.

Use Samples

There's no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to self evaluations. You should find a sample that you like and adapt it for your own use. Some of the things to look when you're reviewing samples are:

  • Personal development questions
  • Career development questions that closely fits telecommuters, freelancers or entrepreneurs
  • Multiple areas of work
  • Questions to help you write out your job description
  • SWOT analysis, which are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

You should type your answers directly into the samples that you find, so that you can save copies of your self evaluations on your computer. When you have at least two, you need to compare your evaluations to determine whether you're improving or going backwards.

Methods of Evaluation

You won't be motivated to complete self evaluations if the method you choose create more work and hassle for you. There are different types to choose from, ranging from writing an essay to placing a check mark next to the appropriate response. Here are some common methods used on self evaluations:

  • Weighted checklist, where some questions are worth more in points than others
  • Essay, which can consist of short question and answers or longer ones
  • Rating checklist

The essay form is the most time consuming, but it's also the most informative. It won't do you any good to choose it, if you won't have the time or inclination to complete it. Find a method that works the best for you.

One of the key to success to succeeding as a work-at-home mom is to learn to be a better worker. You can use semi-annual self evaluations to get better from one evaluation period to the next. Schedule self evaluations on your calendar so that you can develop a routine of getting two done each year. After you've been in business for many years and worked out the kinks of your work and business, you can consider scaling back to annual self evaluations.
