Barefoot Books: A WAHM's Guide

Barefoot Books is a book company devoted to children's books, which was started by two moms, Nancy Traversy and Tessa Strickland, who wanted their children to have books that had beautiful art and amazing stories. This company has grown from a grassroots effort to a global endeavor, as an independent publisher with offices in Bath, England and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The books are sold through their flagship stores in Concord, MA and FAO Schwartz in Manhattan. They are also sold through a global network of partners, and through Barefoot Books Ambassadors who sell within their communities. As an Ambassador, you would be responsible for selling the company's books, videos, CDs, games, puppets and puzzles to others.

Starting Out as a Barefoot Books Ambassador

There are 3 ways to get started as a Barefoot Books Ambassador:

  • Through a home-based business, in which you sell products individually, at parties, at local school events, or even in other ways, such as setting up a booth at a farmer's market
  • Through an online business, in which you promote your products via email, social networking, blogs and other methods
  • Through creative fundraising, in which you sell Barefoot Books to benefit your school or other organization and take a share of the profits for yourself

The company does not provide information on how much it costs to get started as an Ambassador. To apply, you need to fill out an application online or through another Barefoot Books Ambassador in your area.

Compensation as a Barefoot Books Ambassador

No matter which path you choose with Barefoot Books, the compensation levels are the same. You earn 20%-40% of the retail value of your sales and receive a 50% discount on fundraising and stock orders totaling over $500. You can collect loyalty points and win prizes such as original artwork, gifts and vacations. You'll also earn bonuses for spreading the word about Barefoot Books.

In addition to monetary compensation, Barefoot Books Ambassadors get a sneak peek at manuscripts, artwork and projects in development, giving you the chance to offer feedback and ideas.

Thriving as a Barefoot Books Ambassador

To thrive as a Barefoot Books Ambassador, you will need to choose which career path works best for your needs. You can make this a one-time cash earning opportunity by using Barefoot Books as a fundraiser for your school. Or, you can develop a part-time or full-time career by choosing to work at a home-based business or online business--or both. The company does not offer specific information about what an Ambassador typically earns when working from home or online, so you will need to get more detailed information from another Ambassador or from the company itself.

Is It for You?

To really enjoy working as a Barefoot Books Ambassador, you need to be passionate about children's education and reading. You need to love selling books, puzzles and other products to other parents or individuals. You need to choose a career path that works best with your personality; some WAHMs will prefer the online approach, while others will love the home based business approach.
