If you were going to just contact retailers, where would you send it? To the customer service email address? Also, what would you say?

It's always better to find targeted emails, and that does take some time. You can sometimes find them using LinkedIn by looking up a company and then looking for the content director/editor/manager or marketing director. Jigsaw.com also gives you two free emails/phone numbers. You can buy subscriptions after that.

If you can't find a contact person, the second best option is human resources. So, look for a careers or jobs tab on the site. VERY small retailers actually have one email that works for everything, and it usually right to the owner... so if you can't find any other options, I have sent to general email addresses and had good results. I usually just end the message with "Who would be the best person to speak with?"

In the past, I've kept my messages short and sweet. Hi, I'm a writer specializing in catalog copy for X industry. I've worked with top 500 retailers blah blah blah. Who would I speak with about freelance opportunities with the company?

I haven't personally tried the tactics mentioned before, so I can't say 100% how I'd incorporate them yet.

Thanks! Your advice is great and I'm going to give it a try! I'm a little worried about sending out emails. I don't want them to think that I'm spamming them, but I need to start going beyond my comfort level.

See if this link works. He should answer some questions. He had a mini training thing with info on getting started, but it's closed now. Basically, to turn a cold email into a warm one, you find something you have in common with the prospect. Or, you get information about them and start a conversation. For instance. "I read about your company in X magazine and wanted to congratulate you on your expansion..." or "So and so and I worked together at blah blah company, and he thought you and I should speak..."

This isn't always possible, but it's another way to go. Carol Tice may also have a post about is methods on her site. I can't remember, but I know she sold his program before enrollment closed.

Anyway, here's a link. If it doesn't work, let me know.
