Default Press Releases/Back Links

I have a private client who wants a series of press releases to promote his sites.

The "free" sites I've looked at will let you submit one for free, but some want you to pay to be able to put in backlinks - or pay for their professional services to "distribute" your release.

What sites have you used that you think are good?

Plus, I know that there have been countless posts about backlinks, but if someone would like to humor me and tell me your favorite backlink strategies that would be great too. I have to apologize for not paying better attention, but it's been awhile since I've seen a post like that, and it wasn't relevant for me at the time.

What I remember is guest blogging, facebook entries, those hub things, press releases, forum postings - what am I not remembering?

The free sites really aren't all that effective, IMHO. Most of the major websites and news outlets only subscribe to press releases distributed by the paid services such as PRWeb and PRNewsWeb because they aren't used by spammers which gives them more credibility.

PRLog.org allow you one free link in a free release...

This is an example of one I did there last year...

Photoplan Encourages Property Professionals to Consider their Online Presence | PRLog

The backlink showed up in my metrics and the release was picked up by a couple of blogs...

As far as creating backlinks is concerned I truly believe the only approach that can really work is an organic one.. create great linkbait content, offer relevant unique guest blogs, network, network, network within your niche... if a link is easy to get then its probably not worth having!
