Default Scathing Comments

Have you ever had a comment placed on an article that makes you feel inept and like you've had your hide stripped off?

I recently did a three part article on the Keystone XL. After much research and pulling of opinions from multiple sources I wrote the article. When doing these types of articles I try remain in the center regardless of my personal opinion; present both sides and a viewpoint from the center.

Most of the time I'm pretty good at taking adverse comments for what they are; someone else's opinion. But every once in a while I get a comment that makes me angry and want to smack the idiot who obviously doesn't have the ability to comprehend what he reads.

Reality is I know the topic is controversial, I just don't like hearing that I'm a total dunce and have no place writing let alone participating in any type of journalism.

Sorry, had to rant for a moment.

All better now.

Default Scathing Comments

Yes, I've had my share of scathing comments directed at me. Someone told me that those comments aren't really about me but show a lot about the person making them. After I realized that was the case, it was easier to move on after reading them.

Don't spend one more nanosecond thinking about that person. He or she isn't thinking about how you would react to the comment right now.

Occasionally, when I wrote for Bright Hub, I would get "ranting" comments from people who could barely put a coherent thought together. I classified them as trolls and wouldn't publish their comments.

The comments sections there tend to be really vicious. I've been spared for the most part so far but click on the most popular stories of the day and read through the comments. 9 times out of 10 it will be filled with people directly insulting the writer. Luckily in my most popular one, they turned on each other.

I know it's hard but I wouldn't take it personally. I think it just tends to be like a shark tank right before feeding over there.

I try not to read comments on my articles for that reason. Some people are just mean and vicious, and I don't want some small person bringing me down.

How ironic that I was just coming to put something like this up. I got the nastiest comment today. Considering, it was a rewrite and it's his content. I love when they say you didn't give me what I wanted. This is the comment I got in my inbox today. Thank you client and see ya around.

Hey What?????????????

The money has been sent!

You and I both know what you did was not worthy $10.00.

I was only trying to be nice, by paying you for a poor effort. Yet you're
going to bug me about paying you for a bad job!

I was going to pay you, I had to go out of town yesterday, just got back.

I am use to working with professionals not kids that have all kinds of
little funny faces in their email.

When you know you did a bad job you shouldn't press people for payment.

Not lol!

Sincerely,

I'm a cognitive therapist, so even though I've gotten some nasty comments on my articles occasionally (thankfully not too often), I handle them in the way I would tell my clients to do it. I simply choose not to let that person have any power over me. My first reaction might be anger or hurt or some other unproductive emotion that does nothing but sap my energy and waste my time. But then I realize I'm not going to give that person that kind of power over me, and it goes into the mental shredder.

Ha! Actually yes lol..that sound like an angry child that got called out on doing something wrong and not the professional adult he/she is pretending to be.

As for the comment on your article Bobbie..I think it's a sign of good journalism if you elicit that kind of reaction, especially when it comes to sensitive political issues. Even the New York Times writers get attacked on a regular basis..it's just a part of the job
