Default OpenOffice: Can someone help me?

I've been using OpenOffice for my articles.. Now, all of a sudden, when I send them to people, they are not able to open them. Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix the problem?

I had this same problem a few weeks ago with .doc files in Openoffice. Go in and right click on the article in the folder they are saved to. Rename them to included the .doc or extension you need. This will allow others to open them as .doc files (or other extension). Test it by sending it to yourself or to someone who can give you a quick yes or no that it is working.

Hope that helps

I don't know if it is the latest update or what, but I was having a similar problem. My boss couldn't open files unless when I was naming the file, I specifically put filename.doc. Not adding the ".doc" messed things up, even though Save as File Type showed .doc and I had "Automatic file name extension" checked.

I have the same problem. Just like everyone else said, you have to type in .doc. I don't know if it has something to do with a recent upgrade or what.

I thought that Open Office was no longer being updated -- from how long ago, is unknown. Supposedly, many of the people who worked on Open Office went off and created their own version, which is being updated: Libre Office

Now, I don't know anything about it, but I do remember reading this somewhere, and that Libre Office is supposed to be better.

Perhaps the other forum here, wahms in web design, might have some techies that know something about it? I'm wondering if Open Office is becoming obsolete.

Open Office is definitely not becoming obsolete. They joined Apache this summer with the official announcement being made in October, which might explain the issues. They did, however, stop offering support for the commercial version. In April, the newest Beta for Open Office came out and that's what my son's running.
