Default Is FaceBook worth it?

Okay, so a few months ago, I deleted my FB account for my own personal reasons. Mainly because it just got annoying getting countless notifications about meaningless drivel and game / app invitations.

But....

I know a lot of writers use it to promote their work and "connect" with other writers and "employers". Now, I created one just under my writing name, but I'm wondering if I should delete it already.

My question is this: Is a FB account really worth it for freelancers, particularly writers?

I don't really know one way or the other. I have a Facebook page for business purposes but I can't really claim it does me any good.

I do know that social networking of any kind is time consuming. The are several professionals writers who swear by using the social networks and highly recommend them to one and all. Do I think it works for some, probably. For those that can afford to hire others to tinker with it on their behalf, more than likely. For those that have already made a name for themselves, definitely. Me? Not so much.

I think whether it is Facebook or any other of a hundred sites of the same premise, you get what you put into it. I don't have the time to site there and create a social circle of imaginary friends to promote my work. The market is getting tougher and you choose to market yourself any way you feel comfortable with and that produces results with minimal time.

I know this probably isn't what you were looking for. Ultimately, it comes down to do you want to deal with it.

Actually, it's exactly what I was looking for. You make excellent points. Especially THIS one:

LMAO!! I thought I was the only one that saw it that way...

In that case, I 'm glad I could be of assistance.

Ha ha, if anything, Facebook distracts me from getting my work done. So in my case, no, it's not worth it (but is sure is fun!).

I'm the opposite. I absolutely abhor FB, and I try to avoid it at all costs.

Yes it is. I'm tired of the endless bashing, snide remarks and insults constantly directed at Facebook from this forum. You only get out of FB what you put into it. It's a tool and it's up to you to learn how to use it effectively. If you go into it with a nasty mindset and calling everything there 'drivel" there's no point. It also helps to educate yourself on how Facebook works and how to use all the privacy tools they offer. For instance, it's beyond simple to block "meaningless drivel and game / app invitations" from showing up if you so desire. I have found some nice gigs and made some amazing networking contacts thanks to Facebook.

Seriously though, people need to stop insulting Facebook and the people who use it. I assure you my Facebook friends are NOT imaginary in anyway. They are very real-real friends, real colleagues, real clients, and real relatives. You don't have to use or like Facebook, but grow up and stop insulting those who do.

No one "needs" to stop insulting Facebook. Everyone is free to express his or her opinion here.
