Hello Ladies!
I received an invitation to complete two workshops with Writer's Basement as part of an internship for Collective Clicks. The workshops will be paid for by CC as long as I do not quit them. I will be paid $2.00 for the 15 articles of 400 words I write as part of the workshop. They say there is a chance of employment after the internship, but no guarantees. Has anyone heard of either of these companies? Any opinions on the while thing? Thanks! |

How are you liking it so far? Did you make it past the first week? I'm an intern for their professional product reviews, and it's pretty cool so far. I've completed my second week's writing tasks yesterday, and all have been approved automatically except the last one which is still pending. Even though it'll be awesome to have them on my resume and have a letter of recommendation from CC, I really hope that they will hire me. But, as you said, there is no guarantee of employment. That said, I know of a couple websites that do professional product reviews that I may apply to if CC doesn't hire me after the internship, (providing that I do a good job with them).
Anyway, do you like the internship so far? What is your experience? |

I don't mean to be a downer, but $2 for 400 words is a pretty bad rate, especially if you're receiving special training (which should mean a higher quality of work). That kind of pay *might* be justified if it required no special knowledge or English language fluency, but is not even in the ballpark of a professional, skilled writer. It also seems kind of cheesy that they're offering letters of recommendation as some kind of perk. Any decent private client should be willing to serve as a reference--and pay you rates commensurate with your skill.

Yeah, 2 bucks isn't much, but that's not what I'm doing it for. I'm doing it for any possibility that I will be either hired by them, or by another site (such as Consume Search) that specialize in what they are training us to write about. Like, ya know, a real internship.
What my understanding is, not only do they give us a letter of recommendation, but they they DO let us put them as a reference on our resume, and not only that but we get to put on that we learned the program called Word Press -- a popular program that many mainstream sites and blogs requiring freelance writers use. I'm pretty sure the internship is worth it, though, because one or more of us could get hired by them, and there is a reason as to why they are not only paying interns, but the Word Press program as well -- they had to pay WP for each of us to take their online courses -- and that is probably that they are looking for skilled writers to join their team, hence all the training and courses we have to take. Either way, I'm pretty pumped about it so far.

Yea, I'm sorry, but stuff like this always seems sketchy to me. The site says:
We pay for you to take two Writer’s Basement workshops*. If you're a good student in the workshops, we pay you to complete writing tasks we set. If you're a good intern, we provide you with a letter of recommendation for future employment. ...So, this means that the $2 you will get per article while participating in the workshop is not even guaranteed. The workshops are for writing professional product reviews and news articles, respectively. Both skills can be easily acquired for free by dedicating a couple of days to internet research and practice. Even if this site is legit, it seems like the program is taking advantage of writers. You can earn much more right from the start through other sites or on your own with private clients.

That's what bothers me about sites like this, too. I feel like they prey on new writers and make them think that they need their "credential," training, and recommendation before they are worthy of a fair wage. Plus, there are thousands of free Word Press and Internet writing tutorials out there.

Almost every wahm on here with any experience whatsoever knows about WP. See for yourself: http://wordpress.com http://wordpress.org Last I checked, the majority of us figured it out for ourselves and/or asked questions here. That's the whole POINT of the WP platform - ANYONE can use it easily without any fancy training seminar! Last edited by writermomma; 12-31-2011 at 06:01 AM. Reason: still flabbergasted! |

I would never work for that little of pay for any reason, because it's not necessary. There are step-by-step guides to using WordPress available all over the web. I've never taken a class nor I have done any internships, and guess what? I know WP just from experimenting with it. Not trying to be a bia bia (for lack of a better word) or anything, but I sites like this make me very nervous that they are not what they advertise when you really examine the benefits of them. I steer clear from gimmicks like this.

Y'all I have a feeling the poster above is from the company itself (or posting on their behalf). I'd disregard...
