I have Yola and never paid them anything. You don't have to and yet you'll still get a great site. All I paid for is my own domain name but you can get a subdomain on Yola for free.

For what you're looking to do, it sounds like a Facebook Page or Wordpress blog could be your best starting point as opposed to a free traditional website.

If you are going to publish a book you really need your own domain name, which is like $10 a year, or free with hosts like BlueHost, which is $6 per month. You should use WordPress and install it on BlueHost.

Okay thanks for the advice. I would ultimately like to have a site/blog (still trying to figure out which one) that has a ton of articles and other info about the topic and get lots of traffic so when I do decide to sell my book I will already have the foundation of a site.

I like webs.com. I've used it for several years. Nice templates for the sites. Easy to use site builder. And big annoying ads all over like some others are known to do.

With webs do you have to pay anything to get your own domain name? Also can you make money off of a site with webs such as with google adsense or does it have to be a blog to make money off of it? Are there any other ways to make money off of a site?

I tend to use Weebly and Blogger but it seems harder to get them ranked than sites where I pay hosting - don't know why.

I would really encourage you to develop a website where you pay for hosting. This way you have much more control. There are many sad stories out there on people who have developed sites on free hosting accounts only to have them deleted. Look at it as a business. You can pick up a domain name for about $10 a year and hosting for $10 or so a month.
Why build a business on someone else's property?

If you're wanting a website to establish yourself professionally you're better off with a paid host. Most of the free sites are free in exchange for the plastering your site with ads and sometimes delivering popups. The free sites are often pretty amatuerish looking too.

If you want followers you may be better off starting a Wordpress blog. They are free, ad free, and look polished.
