I am currently on my way to $2000 for this month. I'm pretty sure that MrsHannigan and a few others make that much. If you write for DS then you can make that much writing just for them. If you write at least 135 articles a month you should be able to make it. That's only 33-34 articles a week or 6-7 per day-5 days a week. If you have income from other places (which you said you did) then you won't have to write so many.

I'm fairly new to freelancing full-time (it's been about 9 months), and I had been doing it on the side for a few years, but I've consistently made over $2k for the past few months. It comes from a combination of 'content writing' for sites such as DS and LTK mainly, and the rest is from a variety of private clients.
I have a steady gig as a newsletter editor and pretty consistent freelance work with a local firm, so that helps me to know what to expect. Any magazine or other freelance assignments beyond that are just icing on the cake and padding for my portfolio. I'm still a long way from my goal though, want to be making at least $4k a month

I'm about to go down the same path you're thinking about, and I need to make right around 2k before taxes. My strategy is to plan on doing 6-7 DS articles per day, but replace that with private clients when possible and also work on residual income so I can eventually do a little less with DS. I think it's completely do-able. I'm also active with wiseGeek and plan to get involved with one or two more up-front pay sites so I have plenty of work to fall back on if anything unexpected happens with DS.
I'm confident that it's a solid plan, but I, like you, definitely feel better seeing that others have actually done it and made it work over a period of titme.

I only have a few hours a day to work now, so I make $1000 a month before taxes. When I was able to work full time, I easily made $2000-$2500 a month. Of course, we did have a better economy 2 to 3 years ago, so it may be harder to do the same thing now. Instead of stopping my job cold turkey, I moved to a sub position so I had a bit of a cushion. Could you become a substitute nurse for your local school system or offer to be an emergency backup nurse for your current job?

If you are in healthcare, you may qualify for write for LiveStrong or even LS Health through DS. Those assignments pay $20-25 per article.
![]() If I buckle down, I can make about $1600 working part time for DS (I write LiveStrong articles). That's only 5 articles, 4 days per week, which I can do in about three hours per day. I typically only make about $1000 per month, because I'm kind of a slacker, and because I only do this for vacation fund and savings. If I had to, I'm sure that I could make $2,000 per month with just DS articles. Good luck to you!

Thanks to those who answered. I just needed to have some reassurance that others are doing it consistently and it can be done.

Yes, I have been making $2k-plus consistently for over a year, working part time. I did take some time to build up to it but focused on residual income so that even when I take time off for babies, etc. I still make the money I need.
It is completely doable, just work hard from the start to build up private clients, residual income, or whichever business model you choose.
