Default windows defender virus and porn

Has anyone contracted the Windows Defender virus? I have NO idea how I got it-- well I have a gut instinct but don't know for sure. Last night I was checking my email-- thankfully I was done writing and submitting articles-- and all of a sudden something popped up on my screen saying that I have x number of infected files that need to be removed from my computer.

Now I am not one to fall prey to that kinda stuff except if it's a legitimate popup from one of my own computer programs like AVG or another Microsoft program. BUT I clicked it because it looked VERY legit and the next thing I knew there was this icon on my desktop that said "Windows Defender" or "Systems Defender" or something along those lines.

Well, I didn't download that icon or program and by this time I knew that something was screwy. I tried to delete the Windows Defender icon-- b/c it appeared to be a "shortcut" icon-- and after I deleted it-- or attempted to delete it anyway-- it was REPLACED by 3 PORN ICONS!!! I was appalled and am frankly feeling a little mad at this point.

This was all on my laptop-- using my desktop now-- haven't actually turned on my laptop since last night because the next time I do I have to work on getting rid of the stupid virus first.

I guess here's the moral of the story, though; there are 2 for right now:
1 - Don't accept "friend" requests from LinkedIn from people you don't know (I'm not POSITIVE, but the whole thing started as soon as I clicked a LinkedIn accept friend request link in my hotmail inbox)

2- MAKE SURE that you have some sort of browser protection, strong firewall or defender before letting your kids surf the internet.. or other software or something that will CATCH this before it happens. I have a 2-year old daughter and this whole thing has just made me realize that i will NEED to actively protect her from intruders and viruses like this that happen out-of-the-blue. I CERTAINLY wouldn't want her on the computer trying to delete a shortcut or virus only to find out that porn icons suddenly appear on the desktop. So for all the moms here who have kids (and I know there are lots of them), let this be a warning.

And lastly-- sorry to the mods for posting this here if you don't feel it belongs-- it is sorta writing related as I talked about finishing up the articles I was working on last night, PLUS i don't know of any off-topic threads on the forum, PLUS the writing forum is where I've been hanging out a lot lately.

I got one of those viruses last January. Still not sure from where. The porn icons are fake. If it is still the same one I had, the virus doesn't have full access yet. Clicking to delete the porn icons (because the virus maker knows you're going to click them to try and remove them) finishes the process.

It turned off all my virus protection and I had no access. I believe I had MacAffey at the time. I had to DL both AVG and another program to a disk and manually install on my computer to wipe out the virus. If you like I can get the name of the other program from DH when he gets home. It's free for the basic version like AVG.

Thanks for the heads up. I had something similar pop up on my computer a while back, but I doubt mine was connected to LinkedIn. I haven't approved any new requests from them in a long time and I've never approved anyone I didn't know.

When the popup came up, I immediately clicked on the McAfee icon in my tray, NOT the popup. I figured if something really was wrong, McAfee would have a notification on the console, which it didn't. I ended up shutting my computer down just to be on the safe side. I also told my kids and husband that if they ever get a popup like that to not click it and just to shut the computer down.

They look VERY legit so I can't even imagine how many people actually click on it and then end up with some virus on their system.

Heres what you do. DLL- Malwarebtyes' Anti-Malware, its free. Run it. Then reboot the computer and start it in Safe Mode. Run the virus protection. It should be all gone after that. If you need steps on how to do anything, just ask.

I agree 100% about running Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes has saved me twice from virus Spyware/Malware which my Anti-virus didn't find, but Malwarebytes did. I had a VundoH virus which was awfully hard to get rid of last year, and I do remember clicking on one of those popups which said it was from Microsoft and my computer was infected, blah, blah, blah, with their logo and looked completely legitimate. Oh was I wrong, never again! These viruses hide well and are easily missed.

I see those pop up every now and then, b/c when I do my surfing and click.. sometimes it just does. I just "x" out of it, immediately and run my anti-virus checkers. It generally clears it out then. Those things are so annoying. And as far as McAfee.. I would NOT use that. I don't know how many times my ex and I fixed my old babysitters pc because she had that on there and it kept sticking, but eventually we managed to fix it. Good luck!

I prefer and install on computers that I fix, Avast (free). It is reputable and ctaches stuff that others miss. I do agree with not using McAfee. One guy had a computer with McAfee and 24 viruses on his computer. It was a nightmare, but I got rid of everyone of them. If anyone ever sees those pop ups that look legit saying your computer is infected, ignore it and get out. It is a virus trying to infect your computer.

I have seen plenty of ads like that, but I always click the "x" and close out. Thus far they haven't infected me. One tip I advise is to check the title bar and that will tell you if it is real or not. Plus the layout might give you a clue.

You can just reinstall windows and that will erase the virus('s).

Good luck!

You should never reinstall windows to rid a computer of a virus, unless all else fails. And if you do it that way, you lose everything. Avast and Malwareanti do the job very well as long as you do it in order and run the antivirus in safe mode when all of the applications that run in the background don't run because you are only booting up the computer partially.

I just recently had to take my computer to Best Buy to get the same virus off. I got the virus by "x"-ing out of the pop up screens. I was told to use control-alt-delete when a pop up comes up. If you click the "x" and it is an actual virus (well, some of them), it will infect your computer. Which mine did. I couldn't do anything on it. I paid $200 to get it fixed, and they found 7 viruses! I now use Avast, and I've been fine! Good luck!
