Some opinions here, and here. Not to mention here.

I think you can have a lot more control over the content of "your" site with Hubpages, but the links are no-follow?

I don't fancy either, myself, to be honest.

I make more money on HubPages and they're easier to put together than Squidoo. For link building, I use both but I never expect to make revenue when I make a lens. HP's rank well in SE's from what I've seen as well. I made a HubPage about the Farm Town game on Facebook and it's got the #2 result (ahead of the maker of the game) and I think I made about $14 in passive income from my HubPages last month. My lenses just all got locked by Squidoo as they said a few of my topics were considered 'taboo' so I'm not real pleased with them at the moment.

The money that you make with either of these is just a proportion of the money that your work has made for them, though. They're actually paying you out of your own takings and keeping a share themselves. You'd be better off financially doing it independently on your own blog which you host yourself, I think?

My impression is that the overwhelming majority of marketers using Squidoo and Hubpages as part of their online promotion are doing so primarily for the backlinks and as a potential traffic-source for their main site/blog, not because either is a realistic income-source for them in its own right.

mrshannigan--i think you are so amazing. I just can't imagine how you can homeschool six children and still make lots of money writing. How do you do it? Do you have a set schedule? And how do you stick to that schedule?

I agree! I use these sites to help me promote my other sites and for article marketing. The adsense clicks on HubPages is nice but not my primary reason for making them.

Cheers,
D

yeah- I was just using them for linkbuilding, and to have a place that listed ALL my articles of one theme.

and Veronica- I tend to stay offline from about 9am-8pm to be a hands-on mommy. My husband is the household chef & chauffer, and I squeeze in work-time here & there through the day. no schedule, no secret, no sweat

I like HubPages because it's easy to put together a hub and it's kind of fun. You get a share of the AdSense views, so it's debatable whether you could do better elsewhere. You can of course get all of the AdSense views if you have your own site, but it can take a long time to build up any traffic, so the end result would probably be less revenue for a long time. Also, you can build each hub about something completely different. Just one article can be a hub. So, you aren't locked into any specific subject matter like you can be when you have a website.

I've made a moderate amount with HubPages, mostly because one of my hubs gets a lot of traffic. There are several of them that haven't found much of an audience, probably because they're weird, but one of them gets thousands of views a month and consistently makes AdSense money. You also make money through Amazon sales, using your own affiliate account, so any sales you make there are your own. I have a hub that brings in Amazon sales regularly, so that one has been nice to have.

With Squidoo, I never found it to be worth the time. I did everything you were supposed to do, I read a lot about how to keep it up the right way to get a good ranking and bring in traffic and I kept them updated, but the most I ever made was about a dollar a month for three lenses. I abandoned them about a year ago and haven't looked back. Some people have reported success there, but I just can't see it.
