Deb, you are absolutely, 100% correct. Unfortunately, some of our friends here do not get it. With so many different kinds of writing workout there, I do not understand why some new writers and, sadly, some seasoned writers, feel that they must pay for the privilege of working. Now that
there's blood in the water, the sharks will be here soon.

Well, to each his or her own. Deb, let it go in peace.

I wasn't going to enter this discussion again but I thought it important to point some things out. As I have a mother-in-law who is now widowed and had not worked since her children were born I see some of the things she worries about as real issues for women who stay home.

The argument about saving money as we do not go into work so it is okay for us to take lower wages is not business savy. I think people trying to find WAHMs feed into that.

As a freelancer, you are running a business; you are paying taxes now; you have overhead too; including the benefits you gave up working for someone else; whether social security;health insuranceor the employer's 401K match incentives. You seriously have to think of these things if you are going to work at home.

Even if you didn't consider your career a professional one; we are still losing ground not being in the workforce. I'm not trying to paint a bleek picture here but we have to think of our health and well being now and in the future.

Yes you can still save businesses money as your overhead is less than going to a marketing firm but you still have expenses too and your bottom line should reflect that.

Well, I'm going to put my 2 cents in again. I understand that this is an issue up for debate among us. To Deb who gets a lot of writing jobs at a good price, I understand your reasoning. I tend to agree with it. However, there is a much bigger issue here.

This is a member offering the opportunity to write for money. I was with "write for cash" at the same time as Deb... it was a good gig, but it no longer exists. The opportunity to write for steady money is almost made of "unobtainium" for some of us. Some of us are making less than a hundred dollars a month. This is indeed an opportunity, an opportunity thats not available to the general public.

So now matter how you feel about the subject, if I were a potential employer reading this board... I would run... and not come back.

We really need to be much more civilized, especially to those who have an opportunity for those of us not fortunate enough to have good paying writing gigs.

I agree and if I was uncivilized I apologize. I don't take back my remarks about the unfairness of the situation, however.

Incidentally, my Write for Cash clips landed me a newspaper column. Don't be afraid to take yours and reach for the stars. You can get a lot of good writing jobs at a good price too!

Don't get me wrong Deb, I'm not blaming you. It was just that the general tone of conversation was enough to chase away anyone offering a job or opportunity. Sadly, I had emailed Emma just before the conversation took off like that and haven't heard a thing. I can't say I blame her.

I do have a writing gig that pays adequately, but like most of us, I'm always looking.

Honestly, when I was fresh out of college, an employer wanted transcripts. My college doesn't provide that service free to alum, so I had to pay the transcript fee (at least $15) plus the Registrar needed the request in writing, so I had to quickly snail mail my request which was at least another $6. And this was for an employee-status position, not an IC. I could have not pursued the job for that reason, but it seemed like a trivial reason.
