Question Favorite Shopping Cart?

Hello Everyone,

I've always been a "lurker"...However, I've also met some really nice WAHM's here too. I am a freelance web designer who is still in school. I love Wordpress and Joomla. Right now I'm learning OOP. I wanted to know what you guys favor in terms of shopping cart apps? I have been experimenting with e-commerce quite a bit. I enjoy it but, some shopping cart's aren't exactly intuitive or user friendly. I LOVE 3dCart but for my clients that may be a bit expensive if they're just starting out independently. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Without a doubt, Magento is currently the best solution for any online store. With a professional install, design and implementation, it's very easy for my clients to update and provides so many features out-of-the-box that they've all expressed happiness with this product.
For sites heavy on content with products to offer though, WordPress has several eCommerce options that work well within the framework and do not require a complete site overhaul to implement a shopping cart.
Search engine optimization works very well with both (providing the WordPress cart is a god choice, and that both Magento or a WordPress cart is set up correctly upon first implementation).

Hi Tawny,

PrestaShop, OpenCart, and TomatoCart are all free options that should work on pretty much any hosting account. Be careful with Magento, yes it's robust but doesn't always play nice with shared hosting (which is what most people start out with until they get some traffic).

Shopping carts can really be a pain. I spoke to a web designer recently who told me they charge 10x their normal fee when designing an ecommerce site, just because of shopping cart headaches.

One solution I found recently for Wordpress is Cart66. I like it because it's a plugin - you keep your own theme and just add in a shortcode anywhere in your post you want your add to cart button to appear:
Code:
[add_to_cart item="Awesome-Teddy-Bear"]

After hating life with X-Cart for a long time, I've used ECWID for years. A fabulous plug and play solution.

I'm now converting my sites to MarketPress. Holy cow, I've never seen anything so intuitive. I've included it with all our expert client web packages. They love it, too.

I have it running on the first link in my sig.

From a hosting company's perspective, the following are very popular among our customer base:

1) Magento
2) Zen Cart
3) X-Cart
4) OSCommerce (yes, still!)

The first two get my vote

I have worked for years with option cart, It is really user friendly for beginners.. I'm really liking open cart though for all of the features.. Its a bit more advanced for a beginner but Its awesome.
