I think there is awesome earning potential in this field. I agree you should have knowledge as a developer as well as creative ability. I am business partners with my husband. He has over 15 years of Internet experience and he handles the development side of our business. I am the designer. When I first decided to get into this field I bought books on Photoshop and Dreamweaver and also learned GIMP.
I think the dependability of income will depend on how much work you do and what kind of work you do. There is definitely a demand for web design companies as more and more businesses are going online. Best of luck to you.
