Default I believe that Made in the USA is so important

I'm the owner and founder of AllieCat Jewelry. Not only are our products made in the USA, but they are made by US. We're the only direct selling jewelry company actually making the gems we sell, not just beading or buying from China. I even try to have the findings we use made for us domestically, even if we have to pay more.

One of our core values is respect for our Country, (we even have it on our website) and I think that means doing all that we can to make our economy strong. The more we sell, the more people I can hire to create our jewelry!

Jewel Kade jewelry are handcrafted in Alpine, UT. Where it all began. I loved that when I visited the home office there were young ladies home from college sitting at the craft table assembling charms with their ipods in, retired women sitting around chit-chatting putting together necklaces and a man hand-cutting the glass. All ages, all genders and all handmade. So special

That's a great image! Sounds like a wonderful place to visit.

Reality is that as some of these newer companies grow, it may become impractical for them to continue their current practice of making things in-house, and will have to develop the ability to construct their pieces on a larger scale. When that decision point comes, some companies will go overseas, and some will stay in the U.S.

I've seen a few great, well-run businesses with fantastic products really struggle with the challenges of explosive growth. It's important to manage it well, and maintain as much control as possible, when product demands require the use of new vendors. If I were to work for a company that is small and new, one of the questions I would want to know is what management's growth projections are, and what their strategic plan is to successfully manage that growth. If "made in USA" is important to you, you need to know that the company is either far away from having to make a big growth decision, or you need to know how they plan to retain their price points as they need to invest in more plants and equipment, or develop a more efficient process to create their products.

You are right, but I'm not at all worried about Jewel Kade. Not in the least bit. They have the right people in management, making decisions and running the sales field. They keep the leadership team in the loop. Number one priority is keeping the special handmade touches that make Jewel Kade...well Jewel Kade. It makes us stand out from the rest. The best is yet to come....EXCITING things are happening JK. EXTREMELY EXCITING!

That's a great point, Liz. I think many of us have seen companies struggle with explosive growth, no matter if they make the product or buy it. For us at AllieCat, we're the largest producer of our type of jewelry in the world, and sell to lots of other customers worldwide. Since we're the factory, we know we can scale up quickly without relying on other suppliers to scale up for us.

The supply chain from Asia can be a 6-12 month time frame. A product is a hit, the company orders more from it's supplier...the supplier then orders parts and raw materials from their suppliers...and so on. I know of a company that was growing rapidly and their primary supplier went out of business. They had a backup, but that supplier raised their price quite a bit when they found out how important they now were, and then still couldn't produce.

I'd prefer to be in control of the supply, so if a product's a hit, we can increase our volumes in weeks, not months.

I love, love, love what Liz and Leanne have said so far! Very good points made and it really helped me put things in perspective when people ask me where our products are made. Thanks ladies!! Like Cabimom, I find it frustrating that so many textiles are made in China. However, I found that there just isn't that many textile manufacturing companies left here in the USA or at least on the scale that we need to provide products to our customers.

I love that our home office and warehouse is in California and employs many people here in the USA. Not to mention all the sales consultants who are also helping the USA economy too.
