Default Question about using MagicJack Phone??

I saw somewhere on here some saying they use their magicjack phone to do phone prospecting.

I have both a Magicjack phone and cell phone but I got unlimited calling on my cell phone and use that because magicjack only will display your phone number not your name on the person's caller id.

My company has a rule that your name must come up on caller id. Is this a law with the FCC or is this rule just specific to the company I am with?

Thanks for the info.

Hello.

First if you don't mind me saying, if you are going to be prospecting you absolutely NEED a good clear phone signal.
MagicJack has issues. Constant echoing, static, pauses etc...
There is one person on our team who uses a MagicJack and we automatically KNOW when he comes on the conference call because there is a buzzing noise.
We all say hello Tom! LOL!
And when he talks it causes an echo on the conference line.
Same with some VOIP phones.

Cell phones are not 100% clear either depending on where you are so I am always surprised when someone uses their CELL phone as their main phone for prospecting instead of a stable landline phone.
I simply have no patience for unclear and interrupted technical issues when trying to talk to someone about business!

Now, having said that...

It is FCC law to show your number if you are cold calling calling prospects. I don't know if you need the NAME on the phone but definitely the number must be shown. It cannot say private or unknown.

Oh and you will NEVER reach a live person with MagicJack. (unless they have fixed that) It is a customer service nightmare. Just Google MagicJack complaints and you will see thousands of stories from trying to reach a live person to techinical issues.

But then again they are only $19.95 for the year!

You get what you pay for.

But it is cheap if someone wants to eliminate their $60.00 a month phone bill.

Exactly.

It works for some but again you get what you pay for and for prospecting it is just plain annoying.
Be professional and use a stable landline phone.
People will just hang up on you if the service is bad!!

Yeah, I was paying like $60 bucks a month for phone service and got burnt out on paying the monthly fee.lol. So I got the magicjack it was only $70 bucks for 5 years so I thought what the heck.

I have had a few technical issues with it but I found if I stay in my home office where my laptop is the signal is clear.

My biggest concern was being legal with the FCC, I do work purchased leads but no real cold calling.

I went through my companies policies and procedures and it does say that as long as the number shows it is okay.

I agree with you though I cannot stand a phone with technical issues and I know with my magicjack phone I cannot call into our team conference calls I have to use my cell phone for that-so it does have issues but I really love that the only monthly phone bill I have is my cell phone.

I also put in a request last night that they start showing your name on the caller id. From what I have read it use to be the same way with cell phones and eventually they changed it. So fingers crossed hopefully magicjack will do the same.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I saw the commercial on TV and I am like that is cheap but then again, I started to think that what if it does not work? The support must be horrible. I do have a cousin who call me the other day and she said she is using magic jack and the connection seems OK....But for business, better off with a good connection and legit.

VOIP, in general, is simply not as reliable as a good-old telephone. It's gotten lots better in the last several years but I prefer just using my iPhone for everything.

The exception is that I use Skype for international dialing -- but I still access my Skype account with my regular phone line. I dial into a local acess number, put in the number I want to call and I can use my regular phone at Skype rates.

Technically it's using VOIP for part of the call.....but because the prospect and I are both on regular telephones, it sounds just like a regular call.
